Wimbledon from Australia

London, United Kingdom

There are no non-stop flights between eastern Australia and London, so plan a long-haul, one-stop trip and allow for jet lag before the tournament. Australians now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter, and London's July weather is warm but changeable. The All England Club is easy to reach by Underground.

Flights from Australia

There are no non-stop flights from Sydney or Melbourne to London — the shortest options are one-stop services (commonly via Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong or Bangkok). Sydney to London typically takes around 23–25 hours total including the stopover; Melbourne is similar at roughly 22–24 hours. Qantas operates a direct Perth–London service (~17 hours), and a planned non-stop Sydney–London service (~22 hours) is expected around 2027 but isn't flying yet.

Visas & entry requirements

Australian passport holders need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for short visits of up to six months. Apply online via the official UK government app or website; it's digitally linked to your passport. ETAs were introduced for Australians from 8 January 2025, with the requirement strictly enforced from 25 February 2026 — airlines check ETA status at check-in. The fee was £16, rising to £20 from 8 April 2026. Apply at least 72 hours before departure and travel on the same passport. Verify current fees/rules on GOV.UK before travel.

Time difference

During Wimbledon (July), London is on British Summer Time (UTC+1) and eastern Australia is on standard time (AEST, UTC+10), so Sydney/Melbourne are 9 hours ahead of London. The gap shifts to 10 or 11 hours at other times of year. An afternoon match in London is late evening/overnight back home, so allow several days to adjust.

Best time to go

The Championships run for two weeks across late June into mid-July. July is statistically the UK's warmest month: London averages highs around 23°C and lows around 14°C, but it's changeable with roughly 8–10 rainy days across the month — pack for sun and sudden showers. Centre and No.1 Courts have retractable roofs, but outer courts and queuing are at the mercy of the weather.

Money & the Aussie dollar

Wimbledon prices are in pounds sterling. In mid-June 2026 the rate was roughly £1 ≈ AUD$1.90 at the mid-market rate; banks and travel-money services add a markup, so your effective rate is a bit worse. As a rough guide, a ~£30 Grounds Pass is about AUD$57 and a ~£240 final ticket is around AUD$455. Check the live rate before you travel.

Getting around

The All England Club is in Wimbledon (SW19). The most convenient station is Southfields on the District line (about a 15-minute walk), with a tournament shuttle bus and taxi rank. Wimbledon station (~20-minute walk) and Wimbledon Park are alternatives, also served by shuttle buses during the fortnight.

Visa, entry and on-sale details change frequently. Always confirm current requirements with official government and event sources before booking travel or tickets.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Wimbledon Public Ballot open?

It opens roughly a year ahead, in autumn. For 2026 the ballot opened on 2 September 2025 and closed on 21 September 2025. Applying early gives no advantage — winners are drawn at random.

Can I still get tickets if I missed or lost the ballot?

Yes. You can join The Queue on the day for show-court tickets or a Grounds Pass, buy official hospitality through Keith Prowse, or try the on-site Ticket Resale lottery once you're inside.

What is The Queue and do I have to camp?

The Queue is Wimbledon's first-come, first-served system at Wimbledon Park. For a show-court ticket (around 500 per court per day) you'll usually need to camp overnight. Grounds Passes are generally available without camping if you arrive reasonably early.

How much do Wimbledon tickets cost?

In 2025, Centre Court ranged from about £70 early on to ~£240 for the men's final, No.1 Court from about £65 to £155, and Grounds Passes about £20–£33. Official hospitality starts much higher, from around £885 per person.

What is the cheapest way to see Centre Court?

The official same-day Ticket Resale scheme sells returned Centre Court seats for around £15 (and No.1/No.2 for ~£10). You must already be on the grounds and win the daily app lottery; proceeds go to the Wimbledon Foundation.

Do Australians need a visa or ETA for Wimbledon?

Australians don't need a visa for a short visit but do need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Apply online via the official UK app/website (£16, rising to £20 from 8 April 2026), use the passport you'll travel on, and apply at least 72 hours ahead. The requirement is strictly enforced from 25 February 2026.

How long is the flight from Australia to London?

There are no non-stop flights from Sydney or Melbourne — expect a one-stop trip of roughly 22–25 hours total (often via Singapore, Dubai, Doha or Hong Kong). Perth has a direct ~17-hour Qantas service.

How do I get to the All England Club?

Take the District line to Southfields station (about a 15-minute walk), which has a tournament shuttle bus and taxi rank. Wimbledon station (~20-minute walk) and Wimbledon Park are alternatives, also served by shuttle buses.
