What this means for attendees

The surge is not hype pricing on a handful of hotels — it is the median of every bookable hotel in the city for those dates. The closest hotels sell out first, which pushes the whole market up. The practical answer is to book a free-cancellation rate as soon as your event is confirmed: you lock the price with no downside, and with Pay Weekly on event hotels you can split the cost over up to 16 weeks rather than paying it all upfront.

Methodology

  • Rates are live bookable prices from Event Escapes hotel inventory (300,000+ properties via global bedbanks), collected on 27 August 2026, in Australian dollars.
  • For each event we price a two-night, two-adult stay starting on the event's first day (for multi-week events like the Australian Open, the finals weekend), and the identical stay exactly 28 days later (same weekdays) as the baseline. Windows that would land a baseline on a major holiday are excluded.
  • The figure shown is the median nightly rate across the first page of ranked hotels in the city (11 to 66 priced properties per pull in this snapshot) — the "typical bookable hotel", not the cheapest or the most expensive.
  • Trade fairs and their dates come from the Event Escapes trade-fair catalog; concerts and sports events come from our live ticketing inventory. The index is refreshed quarterly; historical snapshots are retained.
