What cancellation cover reimburses, what counts as a covered reason, and how to protect ticket spend.

Trip cancellation cover reimburses the prepaid, non refundable money you lose if you have to cancel or cut your trip short for a reason the policy covers. For event travel it is the benefit that protects your tickets, flights and accommodation. Here is how it works.
It reimburses prepaid costs you cannot get back, such as flights, accommodation, tours and event tickets, up to the limit you insure. Trip interruption cover is the related benefit that helps if you have to cut a trip short after it has started.
Plans list the reasons they will pay out, which commonly include your own illness or injury, the illness or death of a close relative, and some events outside your control. The exact list, and the evidence required, varies by plan, so always check the covered reasons rather than assuming.
To protect event ticket spend, add cancellation cover and include the value of your tickets in your total trip cost. If you then cannot travel for a covered reason, that spend can be reimbursed. This is separate from the event itself being cancelled, which is handled by the ticket seller’s refund policy, not a travel insurance claim.
Cancellation cover generally starts from the day you buy the policy, so buying soon after you book protects your deposits for the longest possible time. Leave it late and anything that happens before you buy is not covered.
Cancelling because you changed your mind is not covered, and neither are events you already knew about when you bought the policy. Undeclared pre existing conditions and disinclination to travel are common exclusions. Cancel for any reason is a separate, optional benefit that not every plan offers.
It can, if you add cancellation cover and include the ticket value in your total trip cost, and you cannot travel for a reason the policy covers. It does not cover a change of mind, and it is separate from the event being cancelled, which is the ticket seller’s refund policy.
A change of mind, or disinclination to travel, is not a covered reason under standard cancellation cover. Some plans offer an optional cancel for any reason benefit for an extra premium, with its own limits and conditions.
