BAUMAG, the Swiss trade fair for construction machinery, construction equipment and tools, holds its 22nd edition at Messe Luzern from Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 January 2027. It runs every two years, and for 2027 it moves from four days to three, Thursday to Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00, after most exhibitors asked to drop the Sunday. Diggers and special vehicles fill the outdoor grounds and the halls carry formwork, scaffolding, recycling plant, concrete and gravel works equipment, tools and site services, aimed at building contractors and tradespeople from painters and roofers to scaffolders and landscapers. The 2025 edition drew more than 18,000 visitors over four days to 200 exhibitors, the organiser says. Messe Luzern is on the Allmend, south of the city centre, with its own S-Bahn stop, Allmend/Messe, two minutes from Lucerne station. That makes the choice of base easy: stay by the station or in the Old Town for restaurants and the lake, or near the Allmend and in Kriens or Horw if you drive or have early stand duties. How do you get to BAUMAG?
Flying in: Zurich (ZRH)
- Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the main international gateway; in the Swiss timetable we checked for January 2027, trains from the airport station reached Luzern in about 1 hour to 1 hour 12 minutes, some direct and some with one change
- From Lucerne station, the S4 or S5 runs every quarter of an hour to the Allmend/Messe stop in two minutes, the organiser says, so the whole trip from the airport is by rail
- Lucerne Tourism says overnight guests in city of Lucerne hotels travel free on buses and trains in zone 10 with the Visitor Card, and that your booking confirmation counts as a ticket on the day you arrive; check that your route is in zone 10
- Check sbb.ch for times on your travel day, as connections vary
By car or coach
- Leave the A2 motorway at the Luzern-Horw exit and follow the signs for Allmend/Messe; parking is signposted, but the organiser recommends public transport because of the expected crowds
- Coaches can drop passengers at the loading edge right in front of the fairground and park at the Rösslimatt coach park in Kriens, reached by a separate access road from Arsenalstrasse
- The organiser puts the walk from the Rösslimatt coach park to the Messe Allmend at about 12 minutes

How do you get around during BAUMAG?
Getting to Messe Luzern each day
- S4 or S5 trains leave Lucerne station for Allmend/Messe at xx.12, xx.27, xx.42 and xx.57, a two minute ride, the organiser says
- Bus line 20 from Lucerne station takes about eight minutes to the fair, according to the organiser
- With a Visitor Card from a city of Lucerne or Kriens hotel, buses and trains in zone 10 are free, which covers most daily trips in town
- Exhibitors can enter the grounds one hour before the official opening with their exhibitor pass, and camping is not allowed anywhere on the fairground
Where to stay for BAUMAG
- The station area puts the S-Bahn to Allmend/Messe, the trains to Zurich Airport and the lakefront on your doorstep
- The Old Town puts you among Lucerne's historic streets and restaurants for an evening with clients

- Horw, south of the fairground near the motorway exit, is another option if you arrive by car
Do you need a visa for BAUMAG?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Switzerland is in the Schengen Area but is not a member of the EU; the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) describes it as one of the associated states that apply all the Schengen rules, and EU and EFTA citizens enter with a valid ID card or passport
- Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries can visit the Schengen Area, Switzerland included, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- SEM says the Entry/Exit System has been introduced throughout the Schengen area since 12 October 2025, so non EU travellers have their fingerprints and a facial image taken at the external border; allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, is not yet in operation; SEM says no applications are collected at this point
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen (type C) visa, which SEM says is valid for Switzerland and the other Schengen states
- SEM does not issue visas itself: Swiss representations abroad decide on them, and the swiss-visa.ch portal explains how and where to apply
- Under Schengen rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel, and the normal processing time is 15 days
- Exhibitors and stand builders from abroad must obtain a permit from the migration office at least eight days before work starts, the organiser says; its exhibitor page links to the Swiss notification procedure and customs information
Documents to carry
- A passport issued within the last ten years and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, as SEM requires for short stays
- Your BAUMAG ticket for each day, or your exhibitor pass
- Hotel booking and return travel details, plus your visa and supporting documents if you need one

First time at BAUMAG?
- The fair is open Thursday to Saturday, 21 to 23 January 2027, from 09:00 to 17:00 each day; there is no Sunday this time
- Entry costs CHF 20 per day, and children up to 16 go in free with an adult, the organiser says; tickets are sold through the official BAUMAG ticket shop on expodoor.ch
- The organiser's site and ticket shop are in German, so allow a little extra time if you do not read it
- Food is on site: a restaurant in hall 2 (pizza, pasta and Asian dishes), Swiss cooking in hall 3, a grill in the outdoor area and a coffee bar in hall 2
- Plan time outdoors as well as in the halls, as the big machines stand on the open grounds, and dress for a Lucerne winter
