LEARNTEC, Europe's leading event for digital education in schools, higher education and the workplace, runs from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 February 2027 at Messe Karlsruhe, the trade fair centre at Messeallee 1 in Rheinstetten on the southwest edge of Karlsruhe. It combines a trade fair with a paid congress, and a trade fair ticket also covers NEW WORK EVOLUTION, which runs alongside it. The 2026 edition, held in May, drew more than 11,000 visitors from 34 countries and over 340 exhibiting companies from 20 countries, according to the organiser. For 2027 the fair moves back to February, the slot it held before the pandemic, so it opens the year for the e-learning and EdTech sector in German speaking Europe. Most hotels are in Karlsruhe itself, and the organiser lists a free Messe-Express shuttle from the Hauptbahnhof and the S2 tram from the city centre, so the station area and the centre both work well alongside hotels in Rheinstetten and Ettlingen. How do you get to LEARNTEC?
By air
- The organiser names four airports: Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (FKB), about 30 minutes away by road, and Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Strasbourg, which it puts at 50 to 60 minutes by road
- The organiser recommends arriving via Frankfurt Airport, the best choice for long haul flights
- Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden is the closest airport and suits flights from within Europe
- Whichever airport you use, plan the last leg to your hotel rather than to the Messe, as most hotels are in Karlsruhe itself
By rail and road
- Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof is the rail hub; the organiser says DB event tickets for long distance trains (ICE, IC/EC) will be offered to LEARNTEC participants, with the booking link added shortly before the fair
- The DB event ticket does not include fair or congress admission, the organiser points out
- By car, leave the A5 at junction 48 Karlsruhe-Süd and follow the Messe signs; for satellite navigation use Leichtsandstraße in Rheinstetten
- The organiser asks LEARNTEC drivers to use car park P1 or P3; parking costs 9 euros a day online or 10 euros on site, and P1 has four electric car chargers
How do you get around during LEARNTEC?
Getting to Messe Karlsruhe each day
- The organiser runs a free Messe-Express shuttle bus between Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof and the main entrance, a journey of about 20 minutes; in 2026 it left from the station forecourt, so check the 2027 timetable on the LEARNTEC site
- From the city centre or Durlacher Tor, tram line S2 towards Rheinstetten stops at Messe/Leichtsandstraße; from the Hauptbahnhof, ride to Europaplatz and change to the S2
- While a fair is on, the organiser says tickets for fare zone 100 are valid to the Messe/Leichtsandstraße stop
- Doors are open from 09:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday and from 09:00 to 16:00 on Thursday
City centre, station, Rheinstetten or Ettlingen?
- The Hauptbahnhof area puts the free shuttle and long distance trains on your doorstep, handy for a late arrival or an early departure
- The city centre has the widest choice of restaurants and puts you on the direct S2 line to the Messe
- Hotels in Rheinstetten keep the morning trip short but are fewer in number
- Ettlingen, south of Karlsruhe, has bus line 106 to the Messe Nord and Messe/Leichtsandstraße stops with no change, the organiser says; KVV.nextbike bikes are another option, with a rental station at Messe/Leichtsandstraße
Do you need a visa for LEARNTEC?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- February is early in the year, so start a visa application in the autumn; the LEARNTEC pages we checked do not describe a visa letter service, so ask the organiser early if you need one
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
- Your LEARNTEC ticket or exhibitor pass, printed or on your phone
- Hotel booking and return travel details, plus copies of your visa supporting documents and travel medical insurance if you need a visa

First time at LEARNTEC?
- Decide early between a trade fair ticket and a congress ticket: the congress tickets include the fair, refreshments and lunch, and both are sold in price stages that rise closer to the event
- Most tickets cost more on site than online, the organiser's price list shows, so buy before you travel
- Anyone with a valid ticket can use the talque app to see the programme and exhibitors, plan an agenda and arrange meetings; register with the same email address you used for your ticket
- Thursday closes an hour earlier, at 16:00, so plan a late afternoon departure around that
- Messe Karlsruhe does not allow animals on the grounds, except guide and assistance dogs
