Leipziger Buchmesse 2027, the Leipzig Book Fair, runs from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 March 2027 at Leipziger Messe, the exhibition centre on the northern edge of Leipzig. The organiser calls it the book and media industry's most important spring event, and the 2026 edition drew 313,000 visitors, including 55,000 trade visitors, with 2,044 exhibitors from 54 countries. The fair is open to readers and trade visitors alike on all four days, and it comes with two companions: Manga Comic Con, which is part of the fair and shares its ticket, and Leipzig liest, which the organiser describes as Europe's largest reading festival, with readings at hundreds of venues across the city. That shapes where to stay. The exhibition centre is about 8 km from the city centre, so most visitors choose between the Innenstadt and the streets around the Hauptbahnhof, where the evening readings happen and the tram and S-Bahn run out to the fair, and hotels in Leipzig Nord nearer the halls. From Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ)
- The organiser puts Leipzig/Halle Airport about 10 to 15 minutes from the exhibition centre by motorway, or eight minutes on the S5 S-Bahn, which runs every half hour
- Berlin Brandenburg (BER) and Dresden airports are the other options the organiser lists; it puts the drive from BER to the exhibition centre at just under 2 hours
- From Berlin, the organiser lists a direct ICE to Leipzig of 1 hour 15 minutes from Berlin Central Station and 1 hour 5 minutes from Berlin Südkreuz
- Hotels near the airport in Schkeuditz suit an early flight, but the city centre puts you closer to the evening readings
By rail and road
- Leipzig has hourly connections to all major German cities, according to the organiser, and during the fair extra long distance trains stop at Leipzig Messe station
- The organiser and Deutsche Bahn run a DB event offer for the fair, valid from 16 to 23 March 2027 with an admission ticket or exhibitor pass and bookable online only
- By car, the organiser asks you to leave the A14 at the Leipzig Messegelände exit, not Leipzig Mitte, which leads straight to the fair car parks
- Long distance coaches stop on the exhibition grounds; motorhomes may park in the visitor car parks by day, but overnight stays on the grounds are not allowed

Getting to Leipziger Messe each day
- Tram line 16 runs to its final stop, Messegelände, and the organiser says trams run more often during the fair
- Regional trains and the S-Bahn stop at Leipzig Messe station, 750 m from the exhibition centre; a shuttle bus runs from there to the Glass Hall main entrance on every fair day from around 11:00
- An extra S-Bahn line, the S20, is set up for the fair and stops at the exhibition centre and Leipzig Central Station (upper platform), among other places
- Where the ticket says so, your admission ticket includes a free return trip on MDV local transport in fare zone 110 on the day of your visit, for the named ticket holder
Around Leipzig
- Most Leipzig liest readings take place in the city, so a hotel in the Innenstadt or near the Hauptbahnhof keeps evening events within reach
- The organiser puts the exhibition centre 8 km from the city centre, about 25 minutes by bicycle, and there is a nextbike rental station near the tram stop
- A free, fenced bicycle park by the Merkurbrunnen fountain at the West Entrance Hall is open from 08:00 to 18:30 on fair days
- Bicycles are not allowed on the S-Bahn during the fair, and March weather in Leipzig can be cold and wet, so pack a warm layer
Do you need a visa for Leipziger Buchmesse (Leipzig Book Fair)?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- Exhibitors and trade visitors who need a supporting letter should contact the Leipzig Book Fair team early; the visitor pages we checked do not describe a visa letter service

- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
- Your personalised fair ticket on your phone or printed, as tickets carry the visitor's name and the free public transport is valid only for that person

- Card payment is not possible on every stand, so carry some cash for book purchases; there are ATMs on the grounds

- Signing sessions are free, but some publishers issue tickets in advance; you may queue no more than half an hour before a signing starts
