The Offshore Technology Conference 2027 runs 3-5 May at NRG Park in Houston, the event's home since it began in 1969. OTC draws more than 30,000 engineers, drilling contractors, operators, service companies and national oil company delegations from across the global offshore energy sector - a genuinely international crowd, with heavy attendance from the Gulf, West Africa, Brazil, Norway and Asia. The exhibition is famous for its scale: full-size subsea hardware, cranes and drilling equipment spill from NRG Center's halls into vast outdoor lots. Hotels cluster in the Texas Medical Center and along the NRG corridor, and this compact band of convenient rooms sells out quickly to exhibitor and delegation blocks - Houston is car-scaled, so proximity matters more here than in most cities. This page lists live bookable rates sorted by real distance to NRG Park.

Downtown's George R. Brown Convention Center puts you within walking distance of several strong tables, with more a short ride away in EaDo, Midtown and Montrose. (NRG Park, home to the rodeo and the Texans, is about 8 miles south.) Reserve steakhouses ahead during major conventions.

Getting there

From IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Airport)

  • IAH is about 25 miles north of NRG Park; a taxi or ride-hail takes 45-60 minutes in normal traffic and roughly US$60-80, longer in the afternoon peak
  • METRO's 102 bus links IAH to downtown Houston, where the Red Line light rail continues south to NRG Park - budget well over an hour but only a few dollars
  • Most international and long-haul flights arrive at IAH, so overseas OTC delegations should plan around it
  • Monday morning of OTC week is the worst arrival window for road traffic on I-45 and I-69; land Sunday if you can

From HOU (William P. Hobby Airport)

  • Hobby is the closer airport to NRG Park - about 11 miles east, typically 20-30 minutes by car and noticeably cheaper by ride-hail than IAH
  • Hobby is dominated by Southwest and domestic routes, so US-based attendees can often save an hour of transfer time by choosing it
  • METRO bus route 40 connects Hobby toward the Fannin South area with a transfer to the Red Line, though most arrivals with luggage take a car
  • Rental cars are quick to collect at Hobby's consolidated facility if you plan to drive during the week

Getting around during Offshore Technology Conference (OTC)

Getting to NRG Park daily

  • The METRORail Red Line's Stadium Park/Astrodome station sits at NRG Park's doorstep - at US$1.25 a ride it is the cheapest and often fastest way in from Medical Center or downtown hotels
  • Staying in the Texas Medical Center puts you one or two Red Line stops from the halls, which is why those hotels command a premium in OTC week
  • Driving is viable but on-site parking lots fill early and the Kirby Drive and South Loop approaches jam from 7:30am
  • Ride-hail works well in the morning; the evacuation at 5pm is slow, so walk to the rail or wait out the first 30 minutes

Around Houston

  • Houston is a driving city - beyond the Red Line corridor (NRG, Medical Center, Museum District, downtown), plan on cars for everything
  • Pay METRO fares with the METRO Q mobile app or a Q card; day passes are inexpensive
  • Evening dinners tend to happen in downtown, Midtown, Montrose or the Galleria - allow 20-40 minutes by car from the NRG area
  • May in Houston is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms possible; the outdoor exhibits make sun protection and water genuinely necessary

Visa & entry

Visa-free / visa on arrival

  • Attendees from the roughly 40 Visa Waiver Program countries - including the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Australia - can attend OTC on an approved ESTA for up to 90 days
  • ESTA is an online authorisation costing about US$40 and valid for two years; secure it before booking non-refundable travel
  • Canadians need only a passport for business visits; the US offers no visa on arrival to anyone

eVisa / visa required

  • Much of OTC's core audience - Brazil, Nigeria, Angola, India, China, the Gulf states outside Qatar and most of Latin America - requires a B-1 business visitor visa with a consular interview
  • Some energy-sector applicants face additional administrative processing, so lodge applications many months before May; OTC's organisers can provide invitation letters to registered attendees
  • Factor in the US$250 visa integrity fee now levied on most newly issued nonimmigrant visas, and EVUS enrolment for Chinese B1/B2 holders

Documents to carry

  • Passport with visa or printed ESTA, plus your OTC registration confirmation or exhibitor credentials
  • Hotel booking and return flight evidence for the border interview
  • For B-1 applications, an employer letter and, where available, an OTC invitation letter stating the business purpose

Visa policies, fees and processing times change often - confirm current rules with the relevant US embassy or official government sources before finalising your trip.

First time at Offshore Technology Conference (OTC)?

  • Collect your badge on arrival day if registration is open - Monday morning queues at NRG Center are long, and the halls open early
  • Wear serious walking shoes: OTC spans NRG Center's indoor halls plus large outdoor exhibit lots, and a day on site easily exceeds 15,000 steps
  • The outdoor exhibits are a highlight - schedule them for the morning before the Houston heat peaks
  • Hotels on the Red Line (Medical Center especially) spare you the parking battle entirely; they are worth the premium
  • International delegations book the closest hotels a year out - if you are late, downtown on the Red Line is a better fallback than a closer hotel off the rail line

Insider tips from repeat attendees

  • The final afternoon is the best time for unhurried technical conversations at booths - decision-makers are still there but the crowds have thinned
  • Much of OTC's real business happens at country-pavilion receptions and off-site dinners in the Museum District and downtown; the exhibit floor is where you arrange them
  • Food service inside NRG Center is functional at best - the Medical Center and Rice Village restaurant scenes are 10 minutes away for a proper lunch meeting
  • Ride the Red Line one stop north to Fannin South or the Medical Center after close and pick up your ride-hail there, skipping the NRG queue

Where is Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) held?

Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is held at NRG Park in Houston, USA. The nearest airport is IAH.

Where should I stay for OTC?

The Texas Medical Center is the sweet spot - one or two light-rail stops from NRG Park with the densest cluster of business hotels. Downtown Houston works well too because the Red Line runs directly to the venue, while the Galleria offers upscale rooms at the cost of a 20-30 minute drive.

Six months or more ahead for anything near NRG Park - returning exhibitors rebook almost immediately after each edition. Booking early with free cancellation is the standard play.

Which airport do I fly into for OTC?

George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) for international and most long-haul flights, about 45-60 minutes from NRG Park. Hobby (HOU) is closer to the venue and often more convenient for domestic travellers.

Can I use public transport to reach NRG Park during OTC?

Yes - unusually for Houston, the answer is a firm yes. The METRORail Red Line stops at Stadium Park/Astrodome right beside NRG Park, connecting it to the Medical Center, Museum District and downtown for US$1.25 a ride.
