Getting there
From Shanghai Hongqiao Airport (SHA)
- Hongqiao is the venue's home airport: the NECC sits beside the Hongqiao transport hub, and Metro Line 2 links Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 to East Xujing, the station serving the venue, in around 10-15 minutes
- A taxi from SHA to venue-area hotels takes 10-20 minutes outside peak hours; use official taxi ranks and expect modest fares given the short distance
- SHA mainly serves domestic routes plus some East Asian cities, so it suits attendees connecting via Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Seoul or Tokyo
- Hongqiao Railway Station, in the same hub, receives high-speed trains from Beijing (about 4.5 hours) and across eastern China
From Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG)
- PVG handles most intercontinental flights but sits on the opposite side of the city, roughly 60-90 minutes from the Hongqiao area by road depending on traffic
- By metro, Line 2 runs the full way from PVG towards East Xujing, but it is a long ride of around 90 minutes with a train change at Guanglan Road
- The Maglev to Longyang Road plus Line 2 westbound saves some time; a direct taxi is simpler with luggage and typically costs in the low hundreds of RMB
- Book airport transfers or use the ride-hailing app DiDi; drivers rarely speak English, so have your hotel name written in Chinese
Getting around during China International Import Expo (CIIE)
Getting to the NECC daily
- Metro Line 2's East Xujing station connects directly to the NECC complex; during CIIE, entry channels, badge checks and security screening are extensive, so add 30-45 minutes to reach your hall
- Line 17 (Zhuguang Road side) and shuttle arrangements published by the organiser supplement Line 2 during the expo; follow official CIIE traffic notices as access routes can change daily
- Road access around the venue is restricted during CIIE, with vehicle permits required in inner zones; taxis and DiDi drop-offs happen at designated outer points
- Staying within one or two metro stops, or walking distance in Xujing/Hongqiao, is worth a significant premium in saved queue time
Around Shanghai
- The metro is vast, cheap and signed in English; pay with a transport card in Alipay or WeChat Pay, or buy a physical Shanghai Public Transportation Card
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card before travelling, as cash and foreign cards are accepted far less widely than mobile payment
- DiDi is the ride-hailing standard and has an English interface; street taxis are metered and honest but hard to hail during expo peaks

- Citizens of around 50 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Canada, can currently enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for business; the policy is extended through 31 December 2026
- Nationals of 55 countries, including the United States, can use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy when arriving in Shanghai with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region
- Visa-free entry still requires CIIE attendance registration; entry to the expo itself is never on-the-spot
eVisa / visa required
- Travellers not covered by the exemptions, or staying beyond the permitted period, need a Chinese M (business) visa from an embassy or visa application centre
- An invitation letter is required for the M visa; CIIE registration and Chinese partner invitations are the usual basis
- Apply four to eight weeks ahead, as visa centres get busy before CIIE and biometric appointments may be required

- Food courts inside the NECC are good by expo standards but queue heavily at 12:00; provincial-pavilion tastings are a better lunch than they look
- Leave the venue before 17:00 or after 18:30; the East Xujing metro crush at closing time is the worst part of the week
