Auto Shanghai (Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition) is one of the world's largest motor shows, held every odd year and returning in April 2027. It draws global automakers, EV and battery firms, tier-one suppliers, tech companies and tens of thousands of trade and press visitors to unveil vehicles and mobility technology. The 2027 edition takes place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai's Hongqiao district. For a business traveller the location is a major advantage: NECC sits about 1.5 km from the Hongqiao transport hub, linking Hongqiao Airport, the high-speed rail station and central Shanghai via Metro Line 2. Because the venue is enormous and the show is a magnet for the international auto industry, hotels around Hongqiao and along Line 2 fill quickly, so securing a room near the venue or on a direct metro line saves significant daily commuting time.

Popular areas for attendees: Hongqiao CBD · Xujiahui · Jing'an/People's Square.

  • NECC is a massive multi-hall venue on the city's western edge, so staying in Hongqiao keeps commutes short
  • Hongqiao hotels sit beside the airport and high-speed rail, ideal for regional day trips and fast arrivals
  • Auto Shanghai is a headline global show; Hongqiao and Line 2 hotels sell out months ahead
  • Downtown stays (Jing'an, Xujiahui) offer nightlife but add a 40-60 minute metro ride each way

Getting there

From Hongqiao Airport (SHA)

  • Hongqiao Airport is only about 1.5 km from NECC via the Hongqiao hub
  • Take Metro Line 10 from the terminal, then transfer to Line 2 toward East Xujing (Xujing East), the closest station to NECC
  • Taxis and ride-hailing (Didi) reach the venue in roughly 10-15 minutes outside peak hours

From Pudong Airport (PVG) or high-speed rail

  • From Pudong, take Metro Line 2 directly westbound toward East Xujing; it is a long cross-city ride, so allow 90+ minutes
  • Hongqiao Railway Station connects to national high-speed rail and is one stop from the venue area
  • A taxi from Pudong is faster but costly given the cross-city distance

Getting around during Auto Shanghai

Metro Line 2 to East Xujing

  • East Xujing (Xujing East) is the nearest metro station; follow signage and pedestrian links to NECC entrances
  • Buy a rechargeable transit card or use Alipay/WeChat QR metro entry
  • Trains are frequent but extremely crowded on show mornings

Taxi and ride-hailing

  • Didi is the dominant app; set it to English and pre-save the NECC address in Chinese
  • Have your hotel and venue names written in Chinese characters for drivers
  • Expect queues and surge demand at hall exits when the show closes each day

Visa & entry

Visa-free transit and short-stay schemes

  • China has expanded visa-free entry for many nationalities and offers 240-hour visa-free transit through Shanghai for eligible travellers connecting onward
  • Terms and eligible countries change frequently, so confirm the current list before relying on it

Who needs a visa in advance

  • Travellers not covered by a visa-free or transit scheme need a Chinese business (M) or tourist (L) visa arranged before departure
  • Business visitors typically need an invitation and should apply well ahead through a Chinese visa centre

Entry rules change; confirm current requirements with the China embassy or official immigration site before booking travel.

First time at Auto Shanghai?

  • Pre-register online for your visitor badge to skip on-site registration queues
  • Opening day and the press/trade days see the heaviest crowds and longest security lines; arrive early
  • NECC is one of the largest venues on earth (a four-leaf clover layout); study the hall map and plan a route
  • Install a VPN before arrival and download offline maps, as some Western apps and sites are restricted in China

Insider tips from repeat attendees

  • Midweek trade days are calmer than the opening and the public days at the end of the run
  • Host client dinners in Hongqiao or Gubei for convenience, or head to the Bund for a marquee occasion
  • Cash is rarely used; set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you travel
  • Book Hongqiao-area hotels as soon as dates are confirmed, as this show clears rooms quickly

Auto Shanghai travel FAQs

Where should I stay for Auto Shanghai?

The Hongqiao business district around NECC is the most convenient, putting you minutes from the halls, the airport and high-speed rail. Hotels along Metro Line 2 toward the city centre are a good compromise if Hongqiao is full.

How much do hotels cost during Auto Shanghai?

Mid-range Hongqiao hotels typically run in the region of USD 120-250 a night, with rates rising sharply during the show. Expect premium and international-brand properties to surge well above their normal pricing.

How early should I book hotels for Auto Shanghai?

Book three to six months ahead. As a global motor show it draws huge international attendance and the best-located Hongqiao rooms sell out first.

Which airport do I fly into for Auto Shanghai?

Hongqiao (SHA) is closest, roughly 1.5 km from NECC. Many international travellers arrive via Pudong (PVG) instead and take Metro Line 2 across the city, or connect through Hongqiao.

Do I need a VPN and mobile payment set up?

Yes. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival since cards and cash are often impractical, and install a VPN if you rely on Western apps, which can be blocked in China.
