BAU 2027, the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems, takes place from Monday 11 to Friday 15 January 2027 at Messe München. BAU is held every two years, and the organiser counted well over 180,000 visitors and 2,200 exhibitors from 58 countries at BAU 2025, spread across 18 exhibition halls. It is a different fair from bauma, the construction machinery show: bauma uses the same fairgrounds in a different month, and its next edition is in April 2028. Messe München sits in Messestadt Riem on the eastern edge of the city, served by the U2 underground at Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost, and the organiser puts the ride from Munich Central Station at about 20 minutes without changing trains. That gives you a real choice when you book BAU hotels in Munich: Messestadt Riem keeps you closest to the halls, while the Altstadt and the streets around the Hauptbahnhof put restaurants and evening plans on your doorstep with a direct U2 ride to the fair each morning. This page shows live hotel rates for your dates so you can compare both. Your BAU ticket is bought separately from the organiser.

How do you get to BAU?

From Munich Airport (MUC)

  • Messe München runs its own shuttle bus between Munich Airport and the fairgrounds, with buses at regular intervals and a one way trip of about 45 minutes; tickets and timetables are on the Airport Messe München Shuttle site
  • S1 and S8 S-Bahn trains leave the airport every 10 minutes for the city centre, a ride of 45 to 60 minutes depending on the route, then change to the U2 towards Messestadt Ost
  • The organiser quotes a fixed taxi fare of €90 from the airport to the exhibition centre, with a journey of around 35 minutes

By rail or road

  • Long distance trains arrive at München Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station), where the U2 reaches the exhibition centre in about 20 minutes without changing, according to the organiser
  • Messe München sits directly next to the A94 motorway, and signs on the motorway guide drivers to the car parks
  • The organiser lists parking at €15 a day in the outdoor car park and €21 a day in the multi-storey car park
  • Going by taxi or car from the station? The organiser suggests adding at least 25 minutes to the journey compared with the U2

How do you get around during BAU?

Getting to Messe München each day

  • Take the U2 towards Messestadt Ost and get off at Messestadt West or Messestadt Ost; the main entrance East is on Am Messeturm, and entrance West is by the Am Messesee bus stop
  • The organiser says BAU tickets entitle the holder to MVV public transport (zones M-6) to and from Messe München on the day of the visit, shown with a passport or ID card; its FAQ adds that only tickets specifically marked include this, so check yours
  • Coats and luggage can be checked at all entrances, and free Wi-Fi is available across the fairgrounds, limited to 200MB per user per day
  • Not every hotel described as near the Messe is within walking distance of an entrance, so check each hotel's position on the map before you book

Messestadt Riem or central Munich?

  • Messestadt Riem is the closest base to the halls and suits early starts on the stands or the 09:30 opening
  • The Hauptbahnhof and the Altstadt are on the U2, so a central hotel still gives you a direct ride to the fair with Munich's restaurants close by in the evening
  • Haidhausen, around Ostbahnhof, is another option east of the centre, with one change of train onto the U2; check the journey in the MVG planner for your hotel
  • BAU falls in mid January, so pack a warm coat and sturdy shoes for the walks between the U-Bahn, the entrances and the halls

Do you need a visa for BAU?

Visa-free / visa on arrival

  • Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
  • The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
  • Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
  • ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly

eVisa / visa required

  • Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
  • Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45, so for a January fair apply in the autumn
  • The BAU FAQ says an official invitation letter from the trade fair organiser is generally no longer required for a visa; your BAU ticket is not a visa letter of invitation

Documents to carry

  • A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Your personal BAU ticket and, if you use it for public transport, the passport or ID card it must be shown with
  • Hotel booking and return travel details, plus copies of your visa supporting documents and travel medical insurance if you need a visa

Entry and visa rules change; check current requirements with the German embassy or consulate, or official EU sources, before you book.

First time at BAU?

  • Buy your ticket online: the organiser's online prices are well below the box office prices (for 2027 a day ticket is €43.50 online and €75 on site), and reduced price online tickets can only be bought online
  • Tickets are personal and not transferable, so every member of your team buys their own ticket or redeems their own voucher
  • If an exhibitor has sent you a voucher, redeem it in the BAU ticket shop rather than buying a ticket
  • Visitor hours are 09:30 to 18:00 on every day of the fair, Monday to Friday
  • The organiser's FAQ says ticket orders are binding with no right to cancel, and asks visitors to bring a printed ticket for the turnstiles, so settle your dates first and print before you travel

Insider tips from repeat attendees

  • BAU runs Monday to Friday, so a Sunday evening arrival puts you in place for the 09:30 opening on the first day, and the full 18:00 close on the Friday leaves time for a late flight or a weekend in Munich
  • The 2027 fair is built around four key topics (a changing habitat, materials and resources, digitalisation and productivity, climate protection and climate adaptation); the organiser has placed digital solutions in Hall C5, serial and modular construction in part of Hall A2 and the new interior work sector in part of Hall A4, with a new BLACK BOX area making its debut
  • The organiser lists its own accommodation partners and warns about fraudsters, advising that booking documents name the specific hotel; we are independent and not affiliated with BAU or Messe München, and you book a named hotel directly with us at the rate shown
