The organiser counted 42,000 participants from 74 countries and 1,777 exhibitors at the 2026 edition. The fairgrounds sit in Messestadt Riem on the eastern edge of Munich, directly connected to the U2 underground at Messestadt West, and Messe München puts the ride from Munich Central Station at about 20 minutes without changing trains. How do you get to EXPO REAL?
From Munich Airport (MUC)
- Messe München is 42 km from Munich Airport, according to the organiser
- During EXPO REAL, Messe München runs its own airport shuttle bus, departing every 30 minutes and running nonstop to the fairgrounds; tickets and timetables are on the EXPO REAL travel page
- S1 and S8 S-Bahn trains leave from below the airport's central area every 10 minutes for the city centre, a ride of 45 to 60 minutes depending on the route, then change to the U2 for Messestadt West
- The organiser quotes a fixed taxi fare of €90 from the airport to the exhibition centre, with a journey of around 35 minutes
By rail or road
- Long distance trains arrive at München Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station), where the U2 towards Messestadt Ost reaches the fair in about 20 minutes without changing
- Messe München sits directly on the A94 motorway, reached from the Feldkirchen-West (6) or München-Riem (5) exits
- The organiser lists parking at €15 a day in the outdoor car park and €21 a day in the multi-storey car park
- The organiser notes that the S-Bahn stop Riem is currently cancelled, so plan on the U2 for the final leg
How do you get around during EXPO REAL?
Getting to Messe München each day
- Take the U2 towards Messestadt Ost and get off at Messestadt West, the stop the organiser recommends; the address is Am Messesee 2, main entrance West
- In 2026 the EXPO REAL ticket included MVV public transport (zones M-6) to and from Messe München on the day of your visit, valid with a passport or ID card; check the 2027 ticket conditions when you buy
- On a weekday morning MVG timetable we checked, the U2 took about 19 minutes from Sendlinger Tor and about 21 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof to Messestadt West, and about 11 minutes from Ostbahnhof with a change to the U2 at Innsbrucker Ring
- Going by car or taxi from the station? The organiser suggests allowing at least 25 minutes more than the U2
Messestadt Riem or central Munich?
- Messestadt Riem is the closest base to the halls and suits early meetings, but check each hotel's position on the map, as not every hotel described as near the Messe is within walking distance
- Sendlinger Tor, at the edge of the Altstadt, and the Hauptbahnhof are both on the U2, so a central hotel still gives you a direct ride to the fair with Munich's restaurants close by in the evening
- Haidhausen, around Ostbahnhof, is a middle option: closer to the fair than the centre on our timetable check, with one change of train
- October evenings in Munich can be cool, so pack a layer for walks between dinners and receptions
Do you need a visa for EXPO REAL?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- Messe München says an official invitation letter is generally no longer required for a German trade fair visa, and its visa service can help if a consulate asks for one; your EXPO REAL ticket is not a visa letter of invitation
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
- Your EXPO REAL ticket and an official photo ID: tickets are personal, and the organiser checks photo ID on site
- Hotel booking and return travel details, plus copies of your visa supporting documents and travel medical insurance if you need a visa
Entry and visa rules change; check current requirements with the German embassy or consulate, or official EU sources, before you book.
First time at EXPO REAL?
- Visitor tickets are sold online only: the EXPO REAL ticket shop for 2027 opens in June 2027, and in 2026 tickets could not be bought at the venue
- Each ticket is personal and only one can be ordered per person, so every member of your team buys or redeems their own
- If an exhibitor has invited you, redeem their online voucher for a free ticket rather than buying one
- Visitor hours for 2027 are 09:00 to 19:00 on Monday and Tuesday and 09:00 to 16:00 on Wednesday, and the turnstiles open at 08:53 for early appointments
- The organiser's FAQ says ticket orders are binding and cannot be cancelled, so settle your dates before you buy

- Oktoberfest 2027 runs on the Theresienwiese from 18 September to Sunday 3 October, the day before EXPO REAL opens, so book early if you plan to arrive on the Sunday
- The fair closes at 16:00 on Wednesday, so an evening flight or train home is realistic if you stay to the end
