CREATIVA, which its organiser calls Europe's largest creative trade fair, returns to Messe Dortmund at the Westfalenhallen from Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21 March 2027, open from 9:00 to 18:00 each day. It is a public fair for anyone who loves to make things, from hobby crafters and families to designers, artists, makers and retailers, with themed areas for garden and floristry, fabric and textiles, painting and drawing, art and craft, design and decor, and plenty of workshops and hands-on areas. For 2027 the organiser names the magical and mystical, country style decor and lace as special themes, with the CREATIVA Stage in Hall 4 and the Craft Academy in Hall 7. The organiser speaks of around 65,000 visitors, and 2026 brought around 420 exhibitors from 22 countries. On the Saturday and Sunday, CAKE & BAKE runs alongside. The fairground is a 10 minute U-Bahn ride south of Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, so CREATIVA Dortmund hotels in the Kreuzviertel by the Westfalenhallen and in the city centre both work well. How do you get to CREATIVA?
From Dortmund Airport (DTM)
- The AirportExpress bus runs non-stop between the terminal and Dortmund Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes, according to Dortmund Airport, and stops on the station forecourt (exit Königswall, towards the city)
- The AirportExpress and the AirportShuttle are not part of the VRR local transport network, so you need a separate ticket for them
- The AirportShuttle links the terminal with Holzwickede station in about six minutes for onward regional trains
- The organiser also names Düsseldorf and Cologne Bonn as nearby airports, useful if your flights are better there
By rail, coach or car
- Dortmund Hauptbahnhof is the rail hub; from there the U45 reaches the Westfalenhallen stop in 10 minutes, and the organiser points to Deutsche Bahn's event offers for the journey to Dortmund
- For drivers, the organiser gives Dortmund Exhibition Center, Rheinlanddamm 200, 44139 Dortmund as the destination address, with access from the B1 (A40) to the A1, A2, A45 and A42, Messe Dortmund says
- The organiser lists car parks A1, A2, A3, A4 and A8, plus C1/C2, D2, E3 and F, with E1 and E2 added at the weekend
- Messe Dortmund charges €11 a car on its A1 to A8 car parks, rising to €12 from 1 January 2027, and visitors to fairs cannot buy parking online in advance
How do you get around during CREATIVA?
Getting to the Westfalenhallen each day
- The U45 runs from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof to the Westfalenhallen stop in 10 minutes, and the U46 reaches the same stop in about five; the organiser says the stops are step free and well signposted
- For CREATIVA 2027 the organiser opens the North entrance (Eingang Nord) and the Messe West entrance, both with box offices
- The Messe Express shuttle for CREATIVA and CAKE & BAKE stops at car parks C1/C2, D2, E and F and at the main entrance of the Westfalenhalle, a few minutes' walk from the North entrance; times are announced shortly before the fair
- The fairground is fully step free: halls 4 to 8 are linked at ground level, lifts serve the upper halls, and wheelchairs can be borrowed against a deposit at the North entrance while stocks last
Where to stay in Dortmund
- The Kreuzviertel and the streets around the Westfalenhallen put you closest to the halls, handy if you plan to shop and carry bags back between visits
- Dortmund city centre and the Hauptbahnhof area have the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, with direct U-Bahn lines to the fair
- Hotels near the airport or Holzwickede suit a late arrival or an early flight, with the AirportShuttle to Holzwickede station
- The organiser points to the cafés and restaurants of the Kreuzviertel, a few minutes' walk from the fair, and to the Westenhellweg shopping street for an evening in town
Do you need a visa for CREATIVA?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- The organiser says that, under a Federal Foreign Office decree, an invitation letter from the trade fair company is generally not needed; if you still want one, you can create it yourself with the visa form on the CREATIVA visitor page and receive it by email
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
- Your CREATIVA ticket or exhibitor pass, plus the self-generated invitation letter if you used one
- Hotel booking and return travel details, plus copies of your visa supporting documents and travel medical insurance if you need a visa

First time at CREATIVA?
- Buy tickets in the organiser's online ticket shop; there are also box offices at the entrances

- Planning to shop? Trolleys and suitcases may be taken into the halls or left at the cloakrooms by the North and West entrances, which charge a small fee for coats (€2.00 an item, subject to change)
- Dogs are not allowed in the exhibition halls, so plan for pets before you travel
- Free WiFi runs on the city's CityWLAN network: join "Hotspot Westfalenhallen" and accept the terms, and use the visitor guide or the fair app for the site map, exhibitors and workshops

- Exhibitors: build-up starts on Sunday 14 March 2027 at 12:00 and runs until 16 March, and dismantling ends at 18:00 on 22 March, so stand teams need around a week in Dortmund; exhibitors may enter two hours before opening on the first day and one hour before from the second day
