INTERMODELLBAU, which the organiser calls the world's largest fair for model building and model sport, returns to Messe Dortmund at the Westfalenhallen from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 April 2027. It is a public show for every age, from model railway fans and RC drivers to families, newcomers and specialist retailers, with flying displays, a large indoor water basin for model boats and club layouts across the halls. The 2026 edition filled six halls with around 400 international exhibitors. How do you get to INTERMODELLBAU?
From Dortmund Airport (DTM)
- The AirportExpress bus runs non-stop between the terminal and Dortmund Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes, according to Dortmund Airport, and stops on the station forecourt (exit Königswall, towards the city)
- The AirportExpress and the AirportShuttle are not part of the VRR local transport network, so you need a separate ticket from the driver (cash only) or the machine outside the terminal
- The AirportShuttle links the terminal with Holzwickede station in about six minutes for onward regional trains
- The organiser also names Düsseldorf and Cologne Bonn as nearby airports, useful if your flights are better there
By rail or by car
- Dortmund Hauptbahnhof is the rail hub; from there the U45 reaches the Westfalenhallen stop in 10 minutes, according to Messe Dortmund
- For drivers, Messe Dortmund gives Rheinlanddamm 200, 44139 Dortmund as the address for satnav, with access from the B1 (A40) to the A1, A2, A45 and A42
- The organiser lists car parks A3, A4 and A8 of the Westfalenhallen group plus DoPark car parks C1/D1, D2 and E1; A3 and A4 are right by the North entrance
- Messe Dortmund charges €11 a car on its A1 to A8 car parks, rising to €12 from 1 January 2027, and visitors to fairs cannot buy parking online in advance
How do you get around during INTERMODELLBAU?
Getting to the Westfalenhallen each day
- The U45 runs from Dortmund Hauptbahnhof to the Westfalenhallen stop in 10 minutes, and the U46 from Reinoldikirche or Stadtgarten in the city centre in about five
- The U42 to Theodor-Fliedner-Heim is another option, a few minutes' walk from the fairground, and the walk is signposted from every stop
- For INTERMODELLBAU 2027 the organiser opens the North entrance (Eingang Nord) and the Messe West entrance
- All the stops named by Messe Dortmund are step free, and wheelchairs can be borrowed against a deposit at the North entrance while stocks last

Do you need a visa for INTERMODELLBAU?
Visa-free / visa on arrival

- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- The organiser says that, under a Federal Foreign Office decree, an invitation letter from the trade fair company is usually not needed; if you still want one, you can generate it yourself with the visa form on the INTERMODELLBAU visitor page

- Families should look out for the hands-on activities: in 2026 children could earn a mini trucker licence or a model boat captain's licence and race on the RC car tracks; the 2027 programme appears on the organiser's site closer to the show
