The Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM), Munich's big spring fair for the skilled trades, returns to Messe München from Wednesday 10 to Sunday 14 March 2027, open daily from 09:30 to 18:00. Since 2023 it has been a five day show for the public: around 800 exhibitors from more than 60 trades cover building, renovation, modernisation and energy, living, interiors and kitchens, outdoor living and gardens, food and drink, and lifestyle and craftsmanship, with live workshops, expert advice and the federal and Bavarian state prizes for craft. It runs alongside «Handwerk & Design», the international meeting point for contemporary craft and jewellery, Garten München and FOOD & LIFE, and in 2026 the four drew over 91,000 visitors to five halls. New for 2027 is the ZUKUNFT HANDWERK Forum in hall C1 on careers, AI, succession and business, included with the regular ticket, while the ZUKUNFT HANDWERK congress for trade professionals runs on 10 and 11 March. The U2 reaches the fair from the city centre in about 20 minutes, so hotels in Messestadt Riem and central Munich both work. How do you get to Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM)?
From Munich Airport (MUC)
- Messe München says the fairground is around 30 to 40 kilometres south of Munich Airport, depending on the route
- S1 and S8 S-Bahn trains leave from below the airport's central area every 10 minutes for the city centre, a ride of 45 to 60 minutes, then change to the U2 for the fair
- Messe München quotes a fixed taxi fare of EUR 90 from the airport to the exhibition centre, a journey of around 35 minutes
- Messe München runs an airport shuttle bus only during some fairs; the IHM pages do not mention one, so plan on the train or a taxi
By rail or by car
- Long distance trains arrive at München Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station), where the U2 runs to the fairground; in the weekday rush hours it runs every 5 minutes, the organiser says
- The fairground sits on the A94 motorway, reached from the Munich-Riem and Feldkirchen-West exits, and a traffic guidance system directs you to the car parks
- The organiser lists parking at EUR 16 a day in the car park and EUR 12 a day on the open-air car park, where vehicles over 2 metres must park; holders of a German severely disabled pass park free
- You do not need an emissions sticker for the fair itself, but you do if you drive into the environmental zone inside the Mittlerer Ring, for example to a city centre hotel
How do you get around during Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM)?
Getting to the fair each day
- The organiser's 2027 notice puts the main entrance at Entrance West, with the U2 stop Messestadt West right by the grounds; its travel page also describes the U2 terminus Messestadt Ost by the East Entrance
- From the city centre the U2 takes about 20 minutes; buy an MVV ticket at a machine or kiosk and validate it in a blue machine before you travel
- Doors are open from 09:30 to 18:00 every day from Wednesday 10 to Sunday 14 March 2027
- Cloakrooms (EUR 2.50) and lockers for hand luggage (EUR 1) are in the basement of the West Entrance, and pushchairs need no extra ticket
Messestadt Riem or central Munich?
- Messestadt Riem is the closest base to the halls, but check each hotel's position on the map, as not every hotel described as near the Messe is within walking distance
- The Hauptbahnhof and the Altstadt are on the U2, so a central hotel still gives you a direct ride to the fair with Munich's restaurants and beer halls close by in the evening
- Haidhausen, around Ostbahnhof, sits between the city centre and the fair and is a good middle option
- Arriving by long distance train? Hotels around the Hauptbahnhof put you on the U2 to the fairground without changing
Do you need a visa for Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM)?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Germany is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- The German Federal Foreign Office lists citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries as needing no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay (type C) visa, applied for through German missions or their appointed visa centres
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months and at least 15 days before travel; standard processing takes 15 days and can be extended to 45
- Exhibitors who need a visa can ask the organiser, GHM, which lists contacts for its offices worldwide on the IHM site
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
- Your IHM ticket, bought online or at the West Entrance, or your exhibitor pass
- Hotel booking and return travel details, plus copies of your visa supporting documents and travel medical insurance if you need a visa

First time at Internationale Handwerksmesse (IHM)?
- The 2027 ticket shop had not opened when we checked; tickets are sold online and on site at the West Entrance, and 2027 prices are not yet published
- The IHM is a show for the public: bring your plans and measurements if you want advice from the trades on building, renovating, kitchens or the garden
- Hands-on areas let young visitors try out trades: in 2026 the Macher gesucht! show offered more than 20 to try
- Dogs are not allowed on the grounds except guide and assistance dogs, and a baby changing station is in the West Entrance
- Messe München is fully wheelchair accessible, and wheelchairs can be borrowed at the West Entrance information desk for a EUR 50 cash deposit
Insider tips from repeat attendees
- Exhibitors: the official stand build starts on 7 March (8 March for FOOD & LIFE) and dismantling runs on 15 and 16 March 2027, so stand teams often need a week or more in Munich
- The Munich Spitzengespräch der Deutschen Wirtschaft, the trades and industry summit held at the IHM, is traditionally attended by the sitting German chancellor; in 2026 Chancellor Friedrich Merz toured the fair on the Friday
