Getting to Walter E. Washington Convention Center

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center sits in downtown Washington, DC, at 801 Allen Y. Lew Place NW, Washington, DC 20001. Events DC, the agency that runs the building, also lists the former address, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW, so you will still see both on tickets, maps and older event pages. Use whichever your navigation app recognizes. The center opened in 2003 and covers 2.3 million square feet, so it fills a large part of the blocks between 7th Street and 9th Street NW.

Metro is the simplest way in. According to Events DC, the center sits above the Mount Vernon Square, 7th Street, Convention Center station, which is served by the Green and Yellow lines. The station entrance is on the southwest corner of 7th and M Streets NW, with entrances leading directly into the convention center. If you arrive on the Red Line, Events DC says Gallery Place Chinatown is a five minute walk. A measured walking route on OpenStreetMap from Gallery Place to the nearest edge of the building comes out at roughly 0.3 mile, which fits that description.

Reagan National Airport (DCA) is the easiest airport for a Metro trip. WMATA lists the National Airport station as a Blue and Yellow line stop, and the Yellow Line trains shown there include trains heading for Mount Vernon Square and for Greenbelt, both of which stop at the convention center station. Events DC names three airports for the region, DCA, Dulles (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI), and gives no travel times for any of them, so check the transit or rideshare time for your own arrival window. If you come by Amtrak, Events DC notes that Union Station connects to the Metro Red Line. Union Station is about 1.1 miles from the building by walking route, so most people ride one stop or take a rideshare instead.

Metrobus stops are on 7th Street and 9th Street NW, according to the guest services page, and the center lists a dedicated Lyft pickup and drop off point at the corner of Mount Vernon Place and 9th Street. A taxi stand is managed on Mount Vernon Place. Events DC also describes Washington as one of the most walkable and bikeable cities in the country, which is a fair summary if your hotel is within a few blocks.

Entrances and halls at Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Events DC lists automatic doors at Mount Vernon Place, L Street, the north and south entrances, and the Metro entrances. The Metro entrance leads straight in from the station, which makes it the best door in rain or summer heat. The Grand Lobby is in the South Building and holds the information desk, where the venue's ambassadors answer questions about the day's events and the city. The L Street Lobby, also in the South Building, has wired internet connections outside meeting room 103A.

The building is stacked in levels, and the official floor plan book is the best guide to what is where. The Lower Level holds Exhibit Halls A, B and C, which join into one hall of 473,000 square feet. Hall A is 151,000 square feet, Hall B is 194,000 and Hall C is 128,000. Show offices overlook these halls from the Concourse Level above. Street Level, called Level 1, holds the Grand Lobby, the East and West Salons (A to I, about 40,000 square feet in total), meeting rooms 101 to 103 and 140 to 160, the Metro entrance and a loading dock entrance.

Halls D and E are on Level 2. Hall D is 111,000 square feet and Hall E is 119,000, and together they make a 230,000 square foot space with ceilings between 30 and 50 feet. Level 3 holds the ballroom, which divides into Ballrooms A, B and C and totals 52,000 square feet, along with meeting rooms 301 to 306 and a 30,000 square foot pre function space with natural light. Across the whole building Events DC counts 703,000 square feet of exhibit space and 77 meeting rooms.

Which door you use depends on your event. Exhibitors who hand carry materials are told to use the entrance at 9th Street and Mount Vernon Place. Truck traffic for Halls A, B and C goes to the docks at 7th and M Streets, and Halls D and E trucks go to the docks at 9th and M. Visitors should follow the signs in your own show's attendee guide, because organizers sometimes route people through one set of doors. The floor plan book on the Events DC site is dated November 2020, so room numbers can change. The venue's own note says guides and floor plans are subject to change, and that Sales can confirm updates.

Last trains and getting back late

Metro service can change, so treat the times here as a snapshot and check WMATA the day you travel. On 16 October 2026 the WMATA page for Mount Vernon Square listed these last trains. Sunday to Thursday, the last Green Line train toward Branch Avenue was 11:55 p.m. and the last toward Greenbelt was 12:23 a.m. The last Yellow Line train toward Huntington was 11:57 p.m. and the last toward Greenbelt was 12:01 a.m. On Friday the last trains ran much later: Green toward Branch Avenue at 1:55 a.m., Green toward Greenbelt at 2:23 a.m., Yellow toward Huntington at 1:57 a.m. and Yellow toward Greenbelt at 2:03 a.m. On Saturday the listed last trains were Green toward Branch Avenue at 1:54 a.m., Green toward Greenbelt at 2:23 a.m., Yellow toward Huntington at 1:57 a.m. and Yellow toward Greenbelt at 1:59 a.m. WMATA also says stations open ten minutes before the first train.

If you walk to Gallery Place Chinatown for the Red Line, WMATA's station page for that stop showed a last Red Line train toward Glenmont at 12:12 a.m. and toward Shady Grove at 12:03 a.m. from Monday to Thursday, and toward Glenmont at 2:12 a.m. on Friday. Because the last train toward your destination is what matters, and because that is different for every line and direction, look at the page for your own stop before you plan a late dinner.

After the last train, rideshare is the practical option. Events DC has a partnership with Lyft and a dedicated pickup and drop off point at Mount Vernon Place and 9th Street, and a taxi stand on Mount Vernon Place. The venue notes that the event schedule is shared with the taxi regulator and that large shows can create heavy taxi demand. If your event ends at the same time as everyone else's, expect a wait at the curb, and consider walking a few blocks to a quieter corner. Many hotels listed below are close enough to walk back, which avoids the question altogether.

The Events DC pages do not list a venue shuttle. Some trade shows run their own shuttles from partner hotels, but those are arranged by the organizer and appear in your attendee guide, not on the Events DC site.

Parking at Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Events DC is direct about this: there is no public parking at the convention center. The venue says more than 3,000 parking spaces sit within a three block radius, including surface lots and garages, and that multiple garages around the center charge hourly and daily rates. It asks exhibitors and attendees to use those public facilities. The official pages do not name a garage operator or publish a map, so choose a garage through a parking app or the operator's own site and confirm height limits and closing time before you commit. Prices are not covered here because they vary by event and by day.

Street parking is tightly controlled. Events DC warns that parking regulations are heavily enforced in the residential areas around the center. Metered street parking next to the center is almost all reserved. Events DC lists twelve metered spaces for vehicles displaying disability permits or tags: nine on the east side of 9th Street, in three groups between Mount Vernon Place and N Street, and three on 7th Street between Mount Vernon Place and L Street. Signs there show a two hour limit from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. None of this is a plan for a full conference day.

Exhibitors have a separate system. The exhibitor services page says show management parking passes are available on Level 56, with allocations decided by event management, and that personal vehicles may unload booth materials at an assigned dock bay but are not allowed on the exhibit floor. If you are driving a van with a load of booth material, ask your show organizer which dock bay and which hours apply before you leave home.

A simple rule works well in this part of Washington: if the event is more than a few hours long, take Metro or stay within walking distance. Driving in, then queuing for a garage on a busy convention morning, is the slowest way to arrive.

Which side of Walter E. Washington Convention Center to stay on

The building is large, so "near the convention center" covers a spread of streets. Using OpenStreetMap coordinates for the hotels and the building, there are four useful areas.

On the south and southwest side, toward Massachusetts Avenue and L Street, you find the hotels that are closest door to door. The Marriott Marquis (901 Massachusetts Avenue NW) is connected to the center by an underground pedestrian connector, according to Events DC. The Courtyard and the Residence Inn share an address at 901 L Street NW. The Henley Park Hotel is at 926 Massachusetts Avenue NW. This side suits people who want to be in the building within a few minutes and who prefer a short walk to the Mount Vernon Place entrance.

On the east and southeast side, toward 6th Street, K Street and Chinatown, are the Hampton Inn at 901 6th Street NW, the AC Hotel at 601 K Street NW and Homewood Suites at 465 New York Avenue NW. This side is closer to Gallery Place and the evening restaurants, and it is easy to reach the Metro entrance at 7th and M. On the north side, Hyatt House sits at 899 O Street NW, in the direction of the Shaw neighborhood that Events DC describes as part of the area around the center. On the west side, 13th Street and K Street have the Comfort Inn at 1201 13th Street NW and the Moxy at 1011 K Street NW, which are a longer walk from the center.

In short: with heavy bags, equipment or a rainy week, pick the Marquis or a hotel on L Street. For evening options, pick the east side. If your event is in Halls D and E, remember that exhibitor hand carry and truck traffic use the 9th Street end of the building, so a hotel toward the west end can save a few minutes.

Budget hotel brands near Walter E. Washington Convention Center: what we could confirm

Rates in this part of Washington move with the convention calendar, so none are quoted here. What you can do is compare the chain brands that sit closest to the center and check the same dates on each. These are the chain options we could confirm.

Hampton Inn Washington Downtown Convention Center, at 901 6th Street NW, is a Hilton brand. Hilton's own listing shows the Walter E. Washington Convention Center at 0.20 miles. Comfort Inn Downtown DC/Convention Center, at 1201 13th Street NW, is a Choice Hotels property. A walking route from the hotel to the nearest edge of the building comes out at about 0.4 mile on OpenStreetMap. Holiday Inn Express Washington DC Downtown, at 317 K Street NW, is an IHG property. IHG's listing places it 0.4 miles from the convention center, and the hotel says the Gallery Place Chinatown and Mount Vernon Square Metro stops are both a few blocks away. Fairfield Inn & Suites Washington, DC/Downtown, at 500 H Street NW, is a Marriott property that describes itself as within walking distance of the convention center. OpenStreetMap routing puts it at about 0.4 mile from the nearest edge.

When the closest hotels are full, a hotel a few blocks farther out is a sensible fallback. If you are traveling with a team, hotels can be booked for a team with a company invoice, and a custom quote is available through Event Escapes for group dates.

How close are the hotels to Walter E. Washington Convention Center on foot?

Distances below come from the hotels' own pages where they could be read, and otherwise from OpenStreetMap walking routes measured to the nearest edge of the building. A walk to a door on the other side of the center will be longer.

Marriott Marquis Washington, DC, at 901 Massachusetts Avenue NW, is the closest in practice because of its underground link to the center. Events DC's history page says the hotel opened in 2014 with 1,175 rooms and is the only hotel connected to the center through an underground pedestrian connector. Marriott's own pages describe it the same way.

The Courtyard by Marriott Washington Downtown/Convention Center and the Residence Inn Washington Downtown/Convention Center share 901 L Street NW. Marriott's marketing calls the location one block from the convention center, the Marquis and the Mount Vernon Square station, and an OpenStreetMap route to the nearest edge of the building is under 0.1 mile. The Henley Park Hotel, at 926 Massachusetts Avenue NW, says on its own site that it is one block to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Washington DC Convention Center, at 900 10th Street NW, is described by Hilton as about 1.5 blocks from the convention center and three blocks from the Metro. The Westin Washington, DC Downtown, at 999 9th Street NW, says on its events page that the center is one block from its door. Also close on the map are the AC Hotel at 601 K Street NW, Hyatt House at 899 O Street NW and the Moxy at 1011 K Street NW, each between roughly 0.15 and 0.2 mile by OpenStreetMap routing.

Upmarket hotels near Walter E. Washington Convention Center: what we could confirm

"Best" depends on what you need from the week, so here is how to sort the options, based only on location and the facts we could confirm.

For the shortest trip to your booth or session, the Marriott Marquis Washington, DC is the clear choice. Events DC calls it the official convention center hotel for the city, with 1,175 rooms, more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space and the only underground link to the building. If your event also uses its meeting rooms, you may not go outside all day.

For a smaller hotel one block away, the Henley Park Hotel at 926 Massachusetts Avenue NW is the one that states a one block distance on its own site. For a full service hotel on 9th Street, the Westin Washington, DC Downtown at 999 9th Street NW describes itself as about three minutes from the center on foot. For suites with a group, Embassy Suites by Hilton Washington DC Convention Center at 900 10th Street NW is about 1.5 blocks away according to Hilton. The Conrad Washington DC, a Hilton hotel at 950 New York Avenue NW, is about 0.4 mile south by OpenStreetMap routing and is a reasonable pick if you want a base a little away from the show crowd.

Whichever hotel you choose, book early for large shows. Events DC's calendar lists shows such as the Washington DC Auto Show in January, Awesome Con in March, OTAKON in summer and the Society for Neuroscience annual convention in November, and hotels near the center will be in demand when they run.

Eating and evenings near Walter E. Washington Convention Center

Inside the building, all food and beverage runs through DC Eats, the program Events DC runs with its caterer Aramark. Expect permanent and portable food stations in the halls and lobby, plus a business center and ATMs in public areas. For the full picture, the venue publishes a Good Eats Map on its site.

Outside, Events DC describes the center as part of downtown's convention and entertainment district, close to the Shaw neighborhood, CityCenter and Chinatown. Gallery Place Chinatown is the main evening cluster, and a five minute walk from the center according to the venue. Capital One Arena is about half a mile by walking route, which matters if a game or concert falls on the same night as your event. Events DC's history page notes that restaurants and a grocery moved into exterior retail space around the building in 2017, so there are places to grab food on the street without going far, though the current tenants could not be confirmed.

For a late dinner, remember the Metro times above. The Green and Yellow lines run late on Friday and Saturday but not on other nights, and rideshare demand spikes at the end of a big event day. A restaurant on your own hotel's block is often the best choice when the schedule is tight.

Tips for exhibitors and visitors

Exhibitors should read the venue's exhibitor services page before shipping anything. The center does not accept event related freight. All exhibitor materials, booths and other drayage must be consigned to the general service contractor once your license period begins. Trucks enter the loading docks from M Street, eastbound, and exit westbound on M Street to 9th Street. Standard dock access hours are 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily, though the hours can be adjusted with your event manager. Exhibit hall floors are rated for 350 pounds per square foot. Sound levels in booths are capped at 55 decibels unless the center approves more. Escalators run during event hours and are controlled by the center's crowd management plan.

Visitors should plan around three things. First, arrive by Metro if you can, using the entrance at 7th and M, since the station entrance leads directly into the center. Second, carry a charged phone and a screenshot of your registration, because the building is big and signal and WiFi vary by hall. Events DC provides complimentary WiFi in some areas and marks hotspots with signs. Third, look for the Convention Center Ambassadors at the Grand Lobby information desk and at Ask Me stations. They can point you to food, restrooms, the Metro entrance and the right hall.

If you need accessible access, the public sidewalks around the center have curb cuts, and the main entrances have automatic doors. Elevators are near meeting rooms, common areas and in the exhibit halls, with Braille call buttons. Twelve metered spaces near the center on 9th Street and 7th Street are reserved for vehicles with disability permits.

If you are booking rooms for a team, hotels can be booked with a company invoice, and a custom quote is available for groups. Ask early so the dates can be held.
