Marvel StadiumSeating Guide: Where to Sit & Best Seats
Marvel Stadium (Docklands) holds 56,347 and was the first Australian stadium with a fully retractable roof. Seating is three levels (1–3) across sections 1–48 with two named ends, Lockett (north) and Coventry (south). Fans rate the Level 3 western wings best for AFL; the Level 2 Medallion Club centre-wing is the premium pick.
Configurations
AFL (oval)
Primary configuration; seats around an oval surface. ~53,343 seats, full capacity 56,347. The two ends are the Lockett End (north) and Coventry End (south); some club games rename them (e.g. Lloyd/Fletcher for Essendon).
Rectangular (soccer / rugby)
All four Level-1 banks roll up to 18 m forward to convert the oval into a rectangle, bringing fans closer to the pitch. Corner bays are lost, lowering capacity to ~47,000. Used rarely due to turf damage and time.
Cricket (BBL / international)
Drop-in pitch on the oval surface; reduced capacity ~47,000. The closing roof allows day-night matches in any weather.
Concert — end stage
Stage at one end; floor filled with seated rows and/or a standing GA pit. Record 76,150 (Adele, Mar 2017). Sections behind and to the extreme sides of the stage become restricted/obstructed.
Concert — closed roof
The roof is closed for many concerts and wet/night events, making it fully enclosed. Patrons frequently report an echo-y / boomy acoustic.
Concert — in the round
Central stage with audience on all sides; sells the normally stage-blocked sections.
Seating levels explained
Level 1 (Lower Bowl)
Sections 1–48 (Level 1)Closest tier to the boundary, rows 1 to ~20+. Contains the movable banks that slide forward for rectangular sports.
Pros: Closest to play and players; best atmosphere; front-row wing seats are prized.
Cons: Low angle makes a full oval hard to read; deep-back Level 1 rows sit under the Level 2 overhang; corner/behind-goal seats are flatter.
Level 2 (Middle tier)
Sections 1–48 (Level 2)Elevated middle ring with a balanced angle. The centre-wing western Level 2 is undercover and houses premium/Medallion Club seating.
Pros: Best balance of elevation and proximity; undercover on the wing; premium dining access.
Cons: Premium centre-wing seats carry a price premium; behind-goal Level 2 still less ideal than wings.
Level 3 (Upper Bowl)
Sections 1–48 (Level 3)Highest ring with a panoramic, tactical view of the whole ground. Western-side wing seats are popular for AFL.
Pros: Best overall view of play structure; good value; the Level 3 wings are a fan favourite for AFL.
Cons: Furthest from the action; for concerts upper rows can lose overhead screens; cricket detail is distant.
Best seats at Marvel Stadium
| For | Sections | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best overall AFL view | Level 3 wing sections, western side (around sections 28–34) | Elevation lets you read the whole oval and ball movement; fans rate the Level 3 wings the best vantage for AFL. |
| Best value AFL | Level 3 upper-tier wings and Level 2 non-premium wings | Lower price than premium Level 1/2 centre-wing, yet excellent panoramic sightlines. |
| Best atmosphere / closest (AFL) | Level 1 front rows along the wings (sections ~2–6 and 28–34) and behind the goals (Lockett/Coventry ends) | Front rows put you on the boundary for maximum immersion; behind-goal seats sit with vocal supporters. |
| Best for soccer / rugby (rectangular) | Level 1 sideline (wing) sections along the halfway line after the lower tiers roll forward | The movable banks slide up to 18 m toward the pitch, so halfway-line lower seats are very close to the touchline. |
| Best for concert (end stage) | Floor front rows/standing pit, then lower Level 1 sections facing the stage | Direct, square-on view of the stage with good sightlines to the screens. |
| Premium / hospitality AFL | Medallion Club centre-wing, Level 2 western side | Undercover, uninterrupted centre-wing sightlines plus dining and lounge access — the prime members’ position. |
Seats to avoid & obstructed views
- Extreme corner bays and the very back rows on any level: Restricted/flat sightlines; furthest from the action.
- Deep-back rows of Level 1 (and lower Level 2) under the tier overhang: The overhang can cut off overhead big screens and part of the roof-line view.
- Behind-goal sections (Lockett/Coventry ends) for AFL tactics: End-on angle gives limited tactical perspective vs wing seats.
- Concert sections behind and to the extreme sides of an end stage: Stage rigging and PA towers block or fully obstruct the stage — a recurring complaint.
- Any closed-roof concert seat for audio: With the roof closed the enclosed bowl produces an echo-y / boomy sound.

Frequently asked questions
What is the capacity of Marvel Stadium?
Total capacity is 56,347, with about 53,343 fixed seats for AFL. Capacity drops to ~47,000 in cricket or rectangular mode because corner bays are lost; the concert record is 76,150 (Adele, March 2017).
Does Marvel Stadium have a roof, and does it close?
Yes — it was the first stadium in Australia with a fully retractable roof, which operates in under 20 minutes (around eight minutes). It's typically closed for night games, wet-weather day matches and many concerts.
Where are the best seats for AFL?
For reading the whole game, fans favour the Level 3 'wings' on the western side. For atmosphere and proximity, front rows of Level 1 along the wings put you on the boundary. Behind-goal seats (Lockett/Coventry) are good for atmosphere but flatter for tactics.
What is the Medallion Club?
The stadium's premium membership area on Level 2, centre/western wing, with reserved undercover seats and access to premium restaurants, the Legends Room Bar & Bistro and a Terrace Bar. Single-match Medallion Club dining packages are available without an annual membership.
How does the seating change for soccer and rugby?
All four Level-1 banks roll up to 18 m forward to turn the oval into a rectangle, bringing sideline fans close to the pitch. This removes the corner bays and lowers capacity, and is used rarely due to turf damage and time.
Which seats should I avoid?
Avoid extreme corner bays and the very back rows on any level, deep-back Level 1 rows under the tier overhang (overhead screens can be cut off), and for concerts the sections behind or to the extreme sides of an end stage.
Why do concerts sometimes sound echo-y here?
When the roof is closed the stadium becomes a fully enclosed bowl, and the hard enclosed surfaces produce a reverberant, echo-y sound that many concertgoers notice, especially in the upper tiers and ends.
What accessible seating is available?
Wheelchair bays with companion seats and 'easy access' seats on all levels, with prime bays near midfield on the lower level. Lifts to all levels are at Gates 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9; sensory rooms at Level 1 Aisle 3 and Level 3 Aisle 31. Book through Ticketek or Guest Services.
