The 64th ERA Congress, the annual congress of the European Renal Association, takes place at Rotterdam Ahoy from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 June 2027, live in Rotterdam and online. With more than 30,000 members, the ERA is one of the largest nephrology associations in the world, and its congress, which Ahoy calls Europe's largest annual nephrology meeting, brings nephrologists, researchers and healthcare professionals together to discuss the latest work in nephrology, dialysis and kidney transplantation, this year under the motto Feel the Energy. The congress moves to a different city each year, so check the venue before you book. How do you get to ERA Congress?
From Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and by train
- Schiphol has the widest choice of international flights; IntercityDirect trains reach Rotterdam Centraal in around 25 minutes, the venue says
- From Rotterdam Centraal, take metro line D (towards De Akkers) or E to Zuidplein, about 10 minutes, then walk a few minutes to Ahoy, according to the official housing bureau
- If you arrive at Rotterdam Blaak, change there to the metro towards Zuidplein
- By taxi, the venue puts Schiphol to Ahoy at about 50 to 60 minutes depending on traffic
From Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM)
- Rotterdam The Hague Airport is the closest airport; the venue says a taxi to Ahoy takes around 20 minutes
- By public transport, the airport says RET bus 33 runs to the airport from Rotterdam Centraal, or from Meijersplein on metro line E, and takes you there within 30 minutes
- Taxis wait right next to the airport building
- By car, Ahoy is on the Rotterdam South Ring (A15), with more than 2,200 parking spaces at 21 euros an event day, or 20 euros booked in advance with a guaranteed space
How do you get around during ERA Congress?
Getting to Rotterdam Ahoy each day
- Zuidplein bus and metro station is about a five minute walk from Ahoy, the venue says
- From the city centre, Ahoy is about a ten minute journey by metro, train or taxi
- There is a taxi rank and an Uber pick up point on the Ahoy forecourt
- If you drive in and stay overnight elsewhere, the venue charges the parking fee again, so it suggests parking at your hotel and coming by public transport

Do you need a visa for ERA Congress?

- The Netherlands is in the Schengen Area; EU, EEA and Swiss citizens travel with a passport or national ID card
- Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries can visit the Schengen Area for business without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, with fingerprints and a facial image taken at the border, so allow extra time at passport control
- ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead, so check before you fly

- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen short stay visa, applied for at the consulate of the Netherlands, as the country you will visit
- Under EU rules you can apply no earlier than six months before travel, and at least 15 days before
- Ask the ERA about a congress invitation letter when you register, and apply as early as you can

- The congress is live in Rotterdam and online, so decide early whether you need to travel for all four days or follow part of it remotely
- Ahoy's visitor rules do not allow suitcases, backpacks or bags larger than A4 inside, and there are paid lockers rather than a cloakroom, so leave luggage at your hotel
- Ahoy is card only: bars, restaurants and lockers take card or contactless payments, not cash
- Early June can be mild or wet in Rotterdam, so pack a light waterproof for the walk from Zuidplein

- Hotels close to Ahoy are few, so central Rotterdam with the ten minute metro ride is often the practical choice for a four day congress
- If someone offers you ERA hotel rooms or registration by email, check it first: the official housing bureau warns about fraudulent agencies and says only its own platform holds the ERA room blocks
