ESCMID Global, the annual congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, comes to Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm from Friday 9 to Tuesday 13 April 2027. The congress moves to a new European city each year, after Vienna in 2025 and Munich in 2026. ESCMID calls it the largest conference in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, and it brings together scientists, doctors, veterinarians and other healthcare professionals for five days of keynote lectures, oral sessions, symposia, workshops, meet the expert sessions and poster presentations, alongside an industry exhibition. By ESCMID's own count the congress draws about 17,500 attendees from 153 countries. Delegates register through ESCMID, with fees by category for members, non-members, young scientists, students, nurses and laboratory staff. Stockholmsmässan is in Älvsjö, and the venue puts it nine minutes from central Stockholm by commuter train, so you can stay next to the venue or in the city and travel in each morning. This page shows live hotel rates for your dates. Congress registration is separate from your hotel booking.

How do you get to ESCMID Global?
From Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN)
- The Arlanda Express runs between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station in 18 minutes, with trains every 10 minutes, according to ESCMID; the platform is underneath the arrivals terminal
- Stockholmsmässan says you can also travel directly from Arlanda Airport to Älvsjö station, the venue's closest neighbour, in 47 minutes
- ESCMID warns that Stockholm has a deregulated taxi market: always check the yellow and white price label on the rear window before you get in, and be careful at airports and stations
- ESCMID recommends well known taxi companies, pre-booked transfers or apps that show the fare in advance
By commuter train and car
- From Stockholm City / T-Centralen it is 9 minutes by commuter train to Älvsjö station, the stop for Stockholmsmässan, and the venue is a few minutes' walk from the station
- Stockholmsmässan says the commuter train from Stockholm City to Älvsjö departs 8 to 14 times an hour; buses also stop at Älvsjö station
- ESCMID points out that delegates travel against the commuter flow, out of the city in the morning peak and back in the afternoon peak
- Parking is in the Stockholmsmässan garage (65 SEK an hour or 190 SEK a day until 20:00) and in outdoor lots (55 SEK an hour or 170 SEK a day), payable with the EasyPark or Parkster apps or by card
How do you get around during ESCMID Global?
During the congress
- Onsite registration includes public transport within the city of Stockholm, though not for exhibition visitor or day tickets
- Badge self-print stations are in the Entrance Hall and in the foyer of the Scandic Talk Hotel, which is connected to the venue during congress hours
- The registration desk opens on Thursday 8 April from 14:00 to 18:00, then from 7:00 or 7:30 each congress day; barcodes are emailed ten days and again two days before the congress
- The exhibition is in Hall A, and the opening ceremony is on Saturday 10 April at 18:30 in Victoria Hall, followed by a reception
Choosing where to stay
- Älvsjö keeps you next to Stockholmsmässan, and the Scandic Talk Hotel can be reached directly from the venue during congress opening times
- Norrmalm and the area around Stockholm City / T-Centralen suit Arlanda Express arrivals, with the 9 minute commuter train to Älvsjö each morning
- Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the rest of central Stockholm give more choice for evenings; check each hotel's route to Älvsjö station on the SL journey planner, which ESCMID recommends
- ESCMID names Congrex Switzerland as the only agency offering accommodation on its behalf; Event Escapes is independent and shows live rates across many Stockholm hotels
Do you need a visa for ESCMID Global?
Visa-free / visa on arrival
- Sweden is a member of the EU and of the Schengen Area, so EU and Schengen citizens and residents do not need a Schengen visa to visit
- Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and many other countries can visit the Schengen Area, Sweden included, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180 day period
- Non EU travellers are registered in the Entry/Exit System at the Schengen area's external borders, with fingerprints and a facial image taken, so allow extra time at passport control at Arlanda
- ETIAS, the planned travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen area, was not yet in operation when we checked; the EU says it will announce the start date several months ahead
eVisa / visa required
- Nationals of countries such as India, China, South Africa and Türkiye need a Schengen visa for a short visit; the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) explains who must apply
- In many countries Sweden's applications are received by VFS Global; in others you apply at a Swedish embassy or consulate, or at another Schengen country's mission that represents Sweden
- ESCMID issues an automated invitation letter once your registration is complete and fully paid; invited speakers, faculty, grantees and accepted abstract presenters can request a specialised letter, and ESCMID advises applying at least 4 months before the congress
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area
- A return ticket, your hotel booking confirmation and proof of funds; Migrationsverket says Sweden expects SEK 700 for each day of your visit
- Travel medical insurance covering at least 30,000 euros, plus your ESCMID registration confirmation, invitation letter and the declaration of venue if you apply for a visa
Entry and visa rules change; check current requirements with the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), the Swedish embassy or consulate, or official EU sources, before you book.
First time at ESCMID Global?
- Registration for 2027 is open, with early fees until 10 February 2027 and standard fees until 10 March 2027; for example, an onsite early fee is 413 euros for an ESCMID member and 593 euros for a non-member, plus 25 percent Swedish VAT
- You need a free ESCMID web user account or an ESCMID membership to register, and individual registration is paid by credit card only
- Children under 18 are not permitted at the congress, accompanying person tickets are not available, and every attendee needs their own registration
- Luggage rules are strict: one small bag and one carry-on size case at most, no suitcases in the session halls, and larger bags must go to the cloakroom by the main entrance
- There is no ATM in the venue, and Sweden is largely cashless, so carry a card for catering and transport
Insider tips from repeat attendees
- Collect your badge on Thursday 8 April, when the registration desk opens from 14:00 to 18:00, to avoid the Friday morning queue
- Onsite delegates get public transport within Stockholm included in their registration, which makes a central hotel and the commuter train to Älvsjö an easy combination
- ESCMID warns of fake websites and emails offering hotel rooms; only emails from @escmid or @congrex addresses come from the congress and its official accommodation agency
