Getting to Manchester Central
Manchester Central sits on Petersfield, at the postcode M2 3GX, on the edge of Manchester city centre. The venue's own getting here page gives its address as Manchester Central Convention Complex, Petersfield, M2 3GX, and tells sat nav users to follow that postcode. The building began life as Central Station, which opened in 1880 and closed in 1969, and it reopened as the GMEX exhibition centre on 21 March 1986. The venue says it took the Manchester Central name in 2007 as a nod back to the original station, and it still talks about its vaulted arches and station clock as the features people remember.
The tram is the simplest way in. The venue names St Peter's Square as the nearest Metrolink stop, a few minutes on foot from the front of the building, and says Deansgate Castlefield is also a short walk. It says trams run every few minutes from early morning until late in the evening and that you do not need a timetable, you just turn up, buy a ticket and take the next one. Greater Manchester's Bee Network site is where to plan the journey and see live departures. That site also posts notices when major tram works change which lines run, so it is worth a look before you set out rather than after you reach the stop.
By train, the venue says services arrive at Piccadilly or Victoria, where you can pick up a Metrolink tram into the centre. Manchester Central is described as a 20 minute walk from Piccadilly or about five minutes by taxi. If you can change onto a train to Oxford Road station instead, the venue says that is only five minutes from Manchester Central on foot, which is the shortest walk of the three main stations. The venue lists these journey times to Manchester: London 2 hours 9 minutes, Birmingham 1 hour 30 minutes, Newcastle 2 hours 37 minutes, Edinburgh 3 hours 34 minutes, Glasgow 3 hours 16 minutes and Bristol 2 hours 59 minutes. It points readers to Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, Northern and National Rail for timetables.
Manchester Airport is about nine miles from the city centre. The venue gives roughly 25 minutes by taxi, or about 20 minutes on the half hourly express rail service into the city. There is a dedicated taxi rank at the front of the venue for pick ups and drop offs, and the venue says it tells Manchester's black cab drivers when it expects to be busy. It also mentions the free bus services that link the city centre's main rail stations, shopping areas and businesses, which can be handy if you arrive at Victoria or Piccadilly with luggage and do not want to walk.
Entrances and halls at Manchester Central
Manchester Central has three public entrances, and which one you want depends on the event. The Central Foyer entrance sits under the clock at the front of the building. The venue says it is used for events in Central Hall and is also the main visitor entrance. Use the main steps and the doors are straight ahead, or take the ramp to the left of the steps and follow it round to the front. The Charter Foyer entrance is on the right hand side of the main steps. The Exchange Foyer entrance is on street level to the right of the forecourt and is used for the Auditorium and the Exchange event spaces, with escalators or a lift up to the rooms.
All three entrances are described as accessible and sensor activated, with intercoms to the control room if you need help. Expect a bag search at the doors. The venue also says it uses Opengate screening and may use search dogs and wands, and it asks visitors to bring one small bag at most. A cloakroom is available for most events once your bag has been searched. There are two concierge areas, one in Central Foyer and one in Charter Foyer, if you need directions or have lost something. Lost property is kept for two months.
The hall everyone remembers is Central Hall. The venue's room page gives its dimensions as 63.7 metres wide by 157.5 metres long, about 10,000 square metres, and 26.38 metres high. It is column free, which is why it works for conventional exhibition layouts and for unusual installations, and it can be used as Central Hall 1 and Central Hall 2 separately. The venue lists a maximum capacity of 10,900 when the two halves are combined. Exchange Hall is the next largest, at 1,834.56 square metres with a maximum of 1,600 theatre style. The Exchange Auditorium is a purpose built 800 seat room.
Smaller spaces include the Charter Suite and the Charter 1 to 3 rooms, The Gallery, and the Exchange 9 and Exchange 11 rooms. Most exhibition space is on the ground floor at street level and can be reached from the main entrance. Events on the first floor use stairs or lifts. Wheelchairs can be hired for use inside the venue if you contact the event safety team in advance, and they must stay in the building. A permanent prayer room is in the Exchange Lower Foyer, a permanent quiet room is in Central Foyer, and a Changing Places toilet is reached through Central Foyer. Induction loops are fitted in Central Foyer, Charter Foyer and the Exchange Auditorium.
Last trains and getting back late
We do not quote a last train or last tram time for Manchester Central, because times change by day and by line and only the operator's live timetable is reliable. The venue itself only says that trams run until late in the evening, so check the Bee Network live departures for St Peter's Square on the day, and check the operator for your train home before you leave the hall. National Rail, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express and Northern are the four sources the venue points visitors to.
What does help is knowing which station you are heading for. The Midland's directions page calls Piccadilly the main station for nationwide services, and the venue puts it at about a 20 minute walk or a short taxi ride. Oxford Road is much closer, about five minutes on foot. Victoria is reached by tram. The Midland's page also says Metrolink links St Peter's Square with Piccadilly, which is the obvious route if your train home leaves from there. If you are carrying stand materials, the taxi rank at the front of the venue is easier.
Evening events run later than trade days. Listings on the venue's calendar include concerts and festival sessions that finish between half past eight and nine in the evening, while trade shows such as GM Innovation Expo are scheduled as a single day finishing mid afternoon. Look up the closing time of your specific event on the venue's events page, then work backwards from your train. If you are travelling a long way and the show finishes late, booking a room in the city centre for the night is often less stressful than racing the last service. We can book hotels for a team with a company invoice, and a custom quote is available if you have several people travelling.
Parking at Manchester Central
The venue has an NCP car park directly below the building. Manchester Central says it is open 24 hours a day all year round and has 700 spaces, with direct access to the venue by lift, stairs and escalators. The escalators bring you out into the triangular courtyard beside the building, from where the Charter Foyer entrance is on your left and the Central Foyer entrance is reached by turning right and following the building round to the front. We have not listed prices because NCP sets them and they vary with the time of day and the event. The venue directs visitors to NCP for prices and for booking, and the NCP phone number is on the venue's FAQ page.
On disabled bays, the venue's own pages do not quite agree. Its FAQ page mentions 18 disabled parking bays in the NCP car park, while its accessibility page says there are 15 disabled spaces on the upper level with lift access to the venue. Rather than pick one number, ring NCP if you need to be sure. The accessibility page also says Blue Badge parking is available near the venue on Mount Street, and links to Manchester City Council's page for the Mount Street car park beside Central Library.
If you drive, the venue suggests following M2 3GX. It gives directions from the M6, M62 and M56, and describes the M60 orbital motorway as the way in from north, south, east and west. Its getting here page also has a Book your parking link to NCP. For hotel guests, the Premier Inn at Lower Mosley Street says it has no parking on site and points guests to the NCP at Manchester Central, which it places 0.2 miles from the hotel. The Midland suggests the Q Park at First Street, which it gives as an 11 minute walk from that hotel.
Deliveries do not use the visitor entrances. The venue has a dedicated loading bay at the side of the building on Watson Street, and says events can have their own loading and unloading arrangements, so exhibitors should wait for the organiser's instructions before arriving. There are bike stands on the main forecourt, for push bikes only and not motorcycles.
Which side of Manchester Central to stay on
Manchester Central sits on the edge of the city centre, and the practical question is which of three neighbouring areas suits you. The first is the St Peter's Square and Peter Street side, which puts you beside the tram stop that the venue says is a few minutes on foot from the front of the building. The Midland, 16 Peter Street, and the Premier Inn on Lower Mosley Street are both on this side. It is the best choice if you want to walk to the hall in the morning and walk back after a long day.
The second is the Oxford Road and Portland Street side, a little further out. Oxford Road station is about a five minute walk from the venue and the Premier Inn at 112 to 114 Portland Street says it is less than a 10 minute walk from the Convention Complex, with the station about five minutes away on foot. You trade a slightly longer walk for a hotel close to a second station, and the Portland Street Premier Inn page also points to Chinatown on its doorstep.
The third is the Deansgate and Castlefield side, where the Deansgate Castlefield tram stop is a short walk from the venue. We did not find a chain hotel on this side whose own page describes the walk to the venue, so we have not named one. If you want to stay there, check the hotel's own page for the walk before you book.
Piccadilly is about 20 minutes away on foot, according to the venue. A hotel near Piccadilly makes sense if you are arriving on an early long distance train, but each trip to the venue then costs time in the morning. For anything further out, such as the Travelodge at Ordsall Lane, plan for a tram or taxi and check the walking route before you rely on it.
Budget hotel brands near Manchester Central: what we could confirm
Manchester Central says there are more than 2,500 hotel bedrooms within a five minute walk of the venue and more than 10,000 across the wider city centre, so there is a lot of choice at the budget end if you book early for a big show. We have only listed hotels we could check against the hotel's own page. We have not quoted any prices, because they move with demand and the busiest exhibition weekends are the ones that sell out first.
The Premier Inn Manchester Central is at Bishopsgate, 7 to 11 Lower Mosley Street, M2 3DW. The hotel's page describes it as close to the Manchester Central Convention Complex and says the nearest tram stop, St Peter's Square, is a two minute walk. It has no parking on site. The same page lists Piccadilly station at 1.2 miles, so for this hotel the tram or the walk through the centre is how you get to the long distance trains.
The Premier Inn Manchester City Centre on Portland Street, 112 to 114 Portland Street, M1 4WB, says it is less than a 10 minute walk from the O2 Ritz, The Bridgewater Hall and the Manchester Central Convention Complex, and that Manchester Oxford Road station is a five minute walk. It also has no parking on site; its page points guests to the Q Park beneath the Novotel nearby. The Premier Inn at 2 Brook Street, M1 7BJ, lists the Convention Complex at 0.9 miles, so treat it as a tram or taxi ride rather than a stroll.
If you are driving and want parking at the hotel, the Travelodge Manchester Central Riverside at Ordsall Lane, M5 4RS, is the one to look at. Its own page says it is one mile from the Manchester Central Convention Complex and has more than 100 car parking spaces, run by Horizon Parking. It is not a walk to the venue, so factor in a taxi or a tram.
How close are the hotels to Manchester Central on foot?
Because the venue puts so many bedrooms inside a five minute walk, the hotels closest to the doors are mostly chain and business hotels on Peter Street, Lower Mosley Street and the streets around St Peter's Square. The ones we could verify are the Midland, the Premier Inn at Lower Mosley Street and the Premier Inn on Portland Street, described above.
The Midland is on Peter Street, at 16 Peter Street, M60 2DS. Its directions page says it is only a short walk from The Bridgewater Hall, the Palace Theatre and the Manchester Central Exhibition and Conference Centre, and that it sits beside St Peter's Square with the Metrolink stop at the side of the hotel. It places Manchester Oxford Road about 200 metres away and Piccadilly 0.6 miles. Those distances come from the hotel's own page and may not match the venue's walking times, so use them as a guide.
Visit Manchester, the city's tourism organisation, runs a where to stay page which the venue recommends and which lists a broad range from luxury hotels to budget stays. The names on that page include The Edwardian Manchester, Kimpton Clocktower Hotel and Whitworth Locke, but the page does not give distances to the venue, so we cannot tell you how far each one is. If walking time matters to you, search the hotel's own page for the venue name.
If you are bringing a group, the Manchester Convention Bureau offers a free accommodation booking service for bookings of 10 rooms or more. It searches for availability and secures rates on an allocation or contracted basis, and builds a booking site for delegates. For smaller teams of exhibitors or staff, hotels can be booked through us on a company invoice, and a custom quote is available.
Upmarket hotels near Manchester Central: what we could confirm
The Midland is the one top end hotel we could check from its own page. It sits at 16 Peter Street beside St Peter's Square, the hotel describes itself as Manchester's most iconic hotel, and its directions page places it a short walk from Manchester Central. Its tram stop is at the side of the hotel and Oxford Road station is about 200 metres away. It offers group booking through an online form, which is useful if your team is staying together.
For a more central, business style stay that is still walkable, the Premier Inn on Lower Mosley Street is the closest chain option we verified, with the tram stop two minutes away. Whether it counts as best depends on what you want. The hotel page lists free WiFi, a restaurant and accessible rooms, and some guest reviews on the page mention it as a good location for the convention centre. Book early for big show weekends.
We have not named other upscale hotels as best, because we could not confirm their distance from the venue from an official page. Visit Manchester lists several, and if you want one of those, check the hotel's own site for how it describes the walk. We can also help with a longer list on request, with the walk times we are able to confirm, and we can quote a team booking on a company invoice.
Eating and evenings near Manchester Central
Junction is the venue's own bar, restaurant, cafe and social workspace, and it is connected to Manchester Central. The venue describes it as somewhere for coffee on the morning commute, lunch, or cocktails with small plates in the evening. It is the easiest option in a lunch break, because you can go there without leaving the building complex.
Beyond Junction, the venue's restaurants and bars page points to Visit Manchester's food and drink listings, which are grouped by cafes and delis, family friendly places, vegetarian and vegan friendly places and after event drinks. It describes the city as having everything from traditional real ale pubs to cocktail bars, with hundreds of options just minutes from the doors. The Premier Inn page for the Portland Street hotel points guests towards Chinatown, The Bridgewater Hall and Manchester Art Gallery for an evening out.
If you need cash, the venue says the nearest ATMs are on St Peter's Square and at the Tesco store on Quay Street. The venue offers free WiFi to all visitors, which helps if you need to check train times in the hall. If your event is a late concert or a ticketed evening show, look at the closing time on the events page before booking dinner, because showtimes vary a lot across the same week.
Tips for exhibitors and visitors
Check which entrance your event uses before you set off. Central Hall shows use Central Foyer, Exchange Hall and Auditorium events use Exchange Foyer, and some events use Charter Foyer, so the first minutes of your day go faster if you know where to join the queue. Bag searches are standard, so travel light and keep coats on while you pass through the Opengate screening.
Exhibitors should plan loading around Watson Street, where the venue's dedicated loading bay is, and should follow the organiser's instructions for timeslots. The venue has an Exhibitor Hub and an Online Ordering page on its website. Most exhibition space is on the ground floor at street level, while first floor events use the lifts, so ask the organiser how heavy items will be moved.
For comfort, the cloakroom is open for most events, wheelchairs can be borrowed if you ask in advance, and radar keys for accessible toilets are collected from the concierge desks. A Changing Places toilet, a prayer room and a quiet room are available. Free WiFi is provided to visitors. Allow extra time at the doors for the big consumer shows on the events page, such as The National Wedding Show, The Good Clothes Show and Manchester Art Fair, because everyone goes through the same screening.
The calendar is busy. At the time of writing, the venue's events page listed trade shows and conferences such as BAUN Conference 2026 and Digital Construction North, public events such as the Laithwaites Manchester Wine Festival, and the Tour Championship Snooker from late March into early April 2027. If you are buying a hotel for a particular weekend, compare it with the events page, because a big public show can push up demand across the whole city centre.
