Getting to NEC Birmingham
The NEC sits next to Birmingham International railway station and Birmingham Airport, which is why it is easy to reach from most of the UK without a car. The NEC gives its sat nav postcode as B40 1NT, and describes itself as clearly signposted from the M42, M40 and M6. It does not give junction numbers on the pages we read, so use the signs and the event car park instructions on the day rather than a junction you remember from an old trip.
By train, the station to use is Birmingham International. The NEC says it is a five minute walk away, and its exhibitor FAQ describes it as a five minute covered walk. You follow the signs from the Piazza concourse, past Hall 2, then up an escalator to a bridge link that connects directly to the station, so you do not need to go outside. Avanti West Coast says the same, that the station is about five minutes from the NEC and joined by a covered walkway. Avanti also says the journey from Birmingham New Street to Birmingham International takes nine minutes, and that if your train does not run direct there are regular connections between the two stations. The NEC separately describes the city centre as a ten minute train ride away.
Direct services depend on where you start. Avanti lists London Euston as a direct journey of just over one and a half hours, Manchester Piccadilly as direct in just over one hour fifty, and Edinburgh Waverley as direct in under five hours. The NEC adds that London Northwestern Railway runs direct trains from London, Milton Keynes and Northampton. Timetables change, so check the operator or National Rail for the date you travel.
By air, Birmingham Airport is next door. The NEC says a free Air Rail Link runs between the airport terminal and Birmingham International station, taking about 90 seconds and running every two minutes. From the NEC you walk across the covered bridge link to the station and carry on to the Air Rail Link. The NEC also says National Express and Megabus run more than 120 coach services a day to Birmingham Airport, which you can use to reach the area from other cities.
By bus, the NEC points visitors to Network West Midlands to plan a journey, and its exhibitor FAQ says buses are available from Birmingham International railway station. We could not confirm individual route numbers from an official page, so we do not list any. By taxi or private hire, the NEC says its black cab partner TOA Taxis operates around the clock, and that Veezu private hire can be booked by phone, by app or at booking devices in the Piazza and the North entrance and exit. Taxis and private hire are dropped off at the Piazza drop off area or the Atrium entrance.
By car, once you reach the site the NEC asks you to follow the electronic signs to your event's designated car park rather than relying only on the sat nav. After parking you can take the free shuttle bus or walk along signposted footpaths to the halls.
Entrances and halls at NEC Birmingham
The NEC pages we read name two main public entrances, the Piazza and the Atrium, and a third called the North entrance and exit. The Piazza is the side that connects to the railway station bridge, past Hall 2. The NEC says its main lost property office is in the Piazza between Subway and Hall 1, and a smaller security office is in the Atrium near Hall 6.
Other hall references on the official pages help you orient yourself. The Str(eat) Kitchen is in the Piazza outside Halls 3 and 4, a Cornish Bakery is near Halls 4 and 6, and Starbucks has outlets on the campus, including drive thru locations. A phone charging station sits in the Piazza and further chargers are opposite Hall 8 in the Atrium. The NEC also lists Changing Places toilets in the Hall 20 Atrium area and by Hall 2 in the Piazza.
Every hall has toilets, and there are more on the Piazza and Atrium concourses. Lifts are signposted on both concourses and beside all the escalators. Cloakrooms are next to the halls. They open 30 minutes before the event opens and close when it closes, and the NEC says it cannot offer overnight storage or a 24 hour cloakroom, so do not leave anything you need to collect later. Charges apply. Cycle racks are by the Piazza main entrance and the Atrium 1 entrance.
Which hall your event uses is set by the organiser, not by the venue, so check the show's own visitor page or floor plan before you travel. We have not listed hall counts or sizes because we did not read a source that states them. If you need a particular hall, the event's exhibitor manual and the NEC site map are the right place to look.
Last trains and getting back late
We have not published a last train time here because we did not read one on an official timetable, and times differ by operator, day and route. The practical advice is to check the operator timetable on the day you travel, particularly if your event runs late or you are heading to a different city.
What the official pages do say is helpful. Avanti West Coast notes that Birmingham International serves the airport, so trains to and from the city centre run early and finish late. It also tells travellers to check timetables in advance because times may change. Avanti's page lists first departures by route, which is useful if you need an early start, and it shows how long the main journeys take, but it gives no single last train that applies to everyone.
Plan your exit before the show closes. Trains are not the only option. The NEC says TOA Taxis, its black cab partner, is available around the clock and takes bookings by phone, online or through its app, and that Veezu private hire has pick up points near the main entrances. You can also book Veezu using devices inside the Piazza and the North entrance and exit. Taxis wait at marked ranks outside the main entrances.
If you are staying locally, a short hotel transfer is simpler than relying on a late train. Several hotels sit within a short walk of the halls (see below), and the NEC's free shuttle buses between car parks and halls usually start one hour before the event and stop one hour after it, so they will not help much after a late finish. Walk or taxi back, or allow enough time to reach the station before your chosen train.
Parking at NEC Birmingham
The NEC's visitor car parks use automatic number plate recognition, so you do not need a ticket. You enter the postcode B40 1NT, follow the electronic signs to the car park allocated to your event, and pay either in advance or before you leave. Payment is cashless, by card or smartphone. The NEC recommends booking in advance because pre booked rates are better than paying on the day, and it says pricing is not the same across booking types. Prices change, so we do not quote any here. Always check the current rate on the NEC booking page.
Parking is normally bookable around six to eight weeks before an event, although another note on the same page says four to six weeks, so look at the booking site for the real date. The NEC offers standard parking, which has thousands of spaces across the site, and Express parking, which gives you a guaranteed space in a designated car park close to the venue. Accessible parking is allocated on a first come, first served basis whether or not you have paid in advance. Motorcycles park free across the campus except in the Express car parks, and minibus and coach parking can be booked online.
Electric vehicle drivers have three options. Park and Charge is pre booked and guaranteed, with 150 chargers at 7kW in the East 3 car park at the bp pulse Gigahub. There are also more than 30 ultra fast 300kW chargers near the Starbucks drive thru, first come first served with a 60 minute maximum stay, and 22 chargers from the Evolt network in selected car parks, which require a standard parking booking.
Some visitors park in a Resorts World Birmingham car park. The NEC warns that if you do, you must pay within Resorts World, not at the NEC. The NEC also says a free shuttle bus runs between car parks and halls during exhibitions, usually starting an hour before the event and stopping an hour after, and that operating times are shown at the bus stops. There is a petrol station on the A45 next to the Arden Hotel, according to the NEC's exhibitor FAQ.
Exhibitors have separate rules. The NEC says its car parks are barrier operated and exhibitors must validate parking before leaving the campus. Stand deliveries to the rear of the halls are booked in a slot through the Voyage Control delivery system. The area behind the halls is for offloading only, and afterwards you move your vehicle to a visitor car park and exit free using your Voyage Control QR code. On busy events a deposit system may apply, with an overstay charge if you stay too long. During open days some organisers give exhibitors free parking through promo codes, others do not. An Exhibitor Advantage Parking upgrade is offered at booking. Breakdown access to the rear of the halls does not need a Voyage Control booking. Lorry parks at North 12 and South 2 have toilet blocks and drinking water.
Which side of NEC Birmingham to stay on
The NEC campus is a long, flat site, so the useful question is which hotel is nearest to the part you will use. The sources we read point to three practical areas. First is the station side. The AC Hotel Birmingham NEC and Airport, formerly the ibis Styles, is on Bickenhill Lane. Holiday Extras says it is within walking distance of the NEC and about five minutes on foot from Birmingham International railway station, with a signposted walk to the NEC. That suits anyone arriving by train with a bag.
Second is the Resorts World side. The NEC's own Destination NEC page lists the Genting Hotel at Resorts World, a four star property with the Santai Spa, and says the Hilton and Crowne Plaza are a short walk from your event. Resorts World Birmingham brings restaurants, a cinema and a casino to the doorstep, so this is the side to choose if you want an evening out without leaving the campus. The Genting Hotel's own site calls itself the only hotel at the heart of Resorts World.
Third is a short taxi or longer walk away. Premier Inn Birmingham NEC/Airport appears in Premier Inn's list of hotels near the NEC at 0.6 miles, and the hotel page says the NEC is a 20 to 30 minute walk. Premier Inn's list also shows Balsall Common (Near NEC) at 4.5 miles. Staying further out can suit a tighter budget, but you will want a plan for getting to the halls each morning.
If your event is a long one and you prefer city restaurants in the evening, the city centre is about a ten minute train ride away according to the NEC. We have not recommended a particular central hotel for this page, because we have not verified one against a primary source. For a team trip, the simplest rule is to stay on the station or Resorts World side if your days are long, and accept a taxi from further out if you want a cheaper room.
Budget hotel brands near NEC Birmingham: what we could confirm
The budget chain we could confirm from an official source is Premier Inn Birmingham NEC/Airport. Premier Inn's own list of hotels near the NEC places it at 0.6 miles, and its hotel page describes it as close to the NEC with a 20 to 30 minute walk, and says Birmingham International Airport and railway station are a few minutes away by taxi. Premier Inn pitches the hotel at people attending shows and exhibitions at the NEC.
That is a longer walk than the hotels beside the halls, so think about how you will cover the distance. Walking is possible. At the end of a long exhibition day or in bad weather, most people will prefer a short taxi, and TOA Taxis is the NEC's black cab partner and operates around the clock.
Other budget chains are sometimes listed near the NEC by booking sites, but we have not confirmed them from the chain's own website, so we do not name them as being near. Prices change a great deal around big shows, and rooms near the NEC fill early for the busiest events, so look at your dates before you plan. Event Escapes can arrange hotels for a team with a company invoice, and a custom quote is available if you are booking several rooms.
How close are the hotels to NEC Birmingham on foot?
Three hotels are described by official or hotel sources as being a short walk from the halls. The NEC's Destination NEC page says the Hilton and the Crowne Plaza are a short walk from your event. It also lists the Genting Hotel, a four star property at Resorts World, as nearby. The page does not give minutes, so treat the phrase as a general guide and check the route on a map for your own hotel.
The AC Hotel Birmingham NEC and Airport on Bickenhill Lane, formerly the ibis Styles, is described by Holiday Extras as within walking distance of the NEC with a signposted walk, and a five minute walk from Birmingham International. Holiday Extras says you can walk from the hotel to the NEC and then use the free monorail to reach the airport terminal, and allows about 15 minutes door to door for that trip. That is a useful combination if you are flying out after the show.
Premier Inn Birmingham NEC/Airport is further out. Its own page gives a 20 to 30 minute walk to the NEC, so it is on the edge of what most people would call walkable. If you have bags, a cart of stand materials or a long day in hard shoes, take a taxi.
A practical point for exhibitors: building and breaking down a stand is heavier work than visiting, and the NEC says it does not provide trolleys, pump trucks or porters, so you bring your own or use the event's lifting contractor. After a day like that, a hotel on the station or Resorts World side saves a lot of walking.
Upmarket hotels near NEC Birmingham: what we could confirm
For a higher end stay, the options verified as being on or beside the NEC campus are the Hilton, the Crowne Plaza and the Genting Hotel. The NEC says the Hilton and Crowne Plaza are a short walk from your event, and describes the Genting Hotel as a luxury four star hotel. The Genting Hotel is part of Resorts World Birmingham, and its website says it is the only hotel at the heart of Resorts World.
The Genting Hotel also has the Santai Spa. The NEC's page describes a pool with hot stone loungers and an outdoor hot tub overlooking the lake, which it suggests for some pampering before or after your event. If you are entertaining clients, the combination of a hotel, a spa, restaurants, a cinema and a casino within one complex keeps everything within a short transfer.
Hotel names and star ratings can change, and chains rebrand. The hotel now called AC Hotel Birmingham NEC and Airport was the ibis Styles, according to Holiday Extras, so check the current name when you book. We have not published prices. If you want several rooms for a team on a company invoice, Event Escapes offers a custom quote.
Eating and evenings near NEC Birmingham
Inside the NEC, the official food and drink page lists The Atrium Kitchen and Bar in the Atrium, Str(eat) Kitchen in the Piazza outside Halls 3 and 4, a Cornish Bakery near Halls 4 and 6, Bagel Factory in the Piazza, Starbucks (with drive thru locations including one in the East Car Park), mobile Subway units in the Food Markets, and a Wetherspoons on the Piazza side. MADE operates in the in hall restaurants at the edge of the halls. Two Londis shops, one in the Piazza and one in the Atrium, sell everyday essentials.
For an evening, Resorts World Birmingham is the main option. Its website lists restaurants including Five Guys, Nando's, TGI Fridays, Miller and Carter, Pizza Express, Zizzi and Las Iguanas. It also lists Sky Bar and Restaurant, a Sports Bar, The World Bar, a casino, Hollywood Bowl, Escape Hunt and a cinema. The NEC describes an eleven screen Cineworld with an IMAX screen, and a casino that is for over 18s only. Resorts World's site also mentions live music nights at High Line on a weekly basis.
If you want something quieter, the Santai Spa at the Genting Hotel is the campus option for a swim or hot tub. If you prefer the city, Birmingham city centre is about a ten minute train ride away according to the NEC.
Tips for exhibitors and visitors
Use the covered bridge between Birmingham International station and the Piazza. It is the simplest way in from the train, and it is also how you reach the Air Rail Link.
Check the show's own visitor page for opening hours, badge collection and entry rules. The NEC says its visitor kiosks that sell and collect tickets are around the venue, near the main entrance of the halls. Children under 16 are not allowed in the halls during build and breakdown. For children visiting a show, the NEC offers free Children Identification Wristbands from security officers on entry.
Exhibitors should read the Exhibitor Manual from the organiser first. The NEC orders services such as power, internet and water through its venue services team, and says orders placed within 28 days of the first day of build are surcharged. Hardwired internet arrives as a cable coiled on the floor and is normally made live on or before the last day of build. The venue offers free Wi Fi across site, but not for anything that is integral to your stand. Overnight cleaning of accessible stand areas is included in the stand package. Every hall has a painters' cupboard with a sink during build and breakdown, but hoses are not allowed. Packing cases cannot be stored by the NEC, so ask the event's lifting contractor.
Bring your own trolleys. The NEC does not hire out trolleys, pump trucks or porters, but every event has a nominated lifting contractor. Book your rear of hall delivery slot through Voyage Control before you travel. Free shuttle buses run between car parks and halls only while a show is open, so do not rely on them at build or breakdown.
If you need mobility help, the NEC says wheelchairs and mobility equipment can be hired and should be booked before arriving. Assistance dogs are welcome, though not recommended for loud events. Induction loops are fitted in various places. These details change, so check the NEC accessibility pages before you go.
