Full detailAbout PPG Paints Arena
PPG Paints Arena is the downtown Pittsburgh home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. It opened in 2010 as Consol Energy Center and seats 18,187 for hockey, about 19,000 for basketball and up to 19,758 for concerts. The PPG Paints Arena seating chart is a simple two-tier bowl: the 100 Level lower bowl (sections 101 to 122), a ring of loge boxes and suites, and the 200 Level upper bowl (sections 201 to 234). For hockey, the best seats are the centre ice club sections 101 to 103 and 111 to 113. Penguins fans often choose 106 to 108, behind the net the home side attacks twice, and the front rows of the 200 Level sidelines (201 to 204 and 218 to 221) give the best value seat view in the building. For end stage concerts, the published chart puts the stage at the Fifth Avenue end, so the Centre Avenue end sections face it head on.
Opened in August 2010 as Consol Energy Center and renamed PPG Paints Arena in 2016, the arena was designed by Populous with local firm Astorino. It has 66 suites, a nod to Mario Lemieux's number 66, around 1,950 club seats, and was the first NHL arena to earn LEED Gold certification.

What is the PPG Paints Arena seating capacity?
The PPG Paints Arena seating capacity is about 18,187 seats. The number in use changes with the layout, so here is how each set-up works.
NHL hockey (Pittsburgh Penguins)
Hockey capacity is 18,187. The team benches sit in front of 100 Level sections 101 to 103 on the Washington Place side, with the penalty box side opposite in front of 111 to 113. The Penguins attack twice towards the Centre Avenue end, in front of sections 106 to 108.
Concerts (end stage)
Wikipedia gives a concert capacity of 14,536 to 19,758 depending on the layout. The arena's published end stage charts place the stage at the Fifth Avenue end in front of sections 117 to 119, with numbered floor sections on the arena floor and the bowl facing the stage. Sections round and behind the stage are closed or restricted depending on the production.
Basketball and other events
Around 19,000 for basketball, plus family shows, rodeo, circus and comedy. Layouts vary by event, so always check the seat map for your show.
What are the seating levels at PPG Paints Arena?
100 Level club seats101-103, 111-113
Six centre ice sections on the bench side (101 to 103) and the penalty box side (111 to 113). The arena says its 1,900-plus club seats are no more than 23 rows from the ice and come with access to the premium lounges and the fine-dining restaurant.
Pros: Closest, most balanced view of the whole rink; padded club seats with lounge access; 101 to 103 sit right behind the benches.
Cons: The most expensive regular seats; the front rows behind the benches look through players and staff standing at the boards.
100 Level sides and corners104-105, 109-110, 114-116, 120-122
The lower bowl sections either side of the club blocks and round the corners. They keep you close to the glass with a diagonal view that is good for following play into the zones.
Pros: Close to the action for less than the club sections; corners give a good angle on power plays and zone entries.
Cons: Play at the far end looks distant from the corners; low rows are more side on.
100 Level ends106-108, 117-119
Behind the nets at the Centre Avenue end (106 to 108) and the Fifth Avenue end (117 to 119). The Centre Avenue end is where the Penguins attack twice; the Fifth Avenue end is usually the stage end for concerts.
Pros: Great for goals and goaltending at your end; 106 to 108 see the Penguins attack in two of three periods.
Cons: Play at the other end is a long way off, and the protective netting behind each goal sits in your line of sight in the lower rows.
200 Level sidelines201-204, 218-221
The centre sections of the upper bowl, above the loge boxes and suites. Sections 201 to 204 sit above the bench side, and 218 to 221 face the benches from across the rink.
Pros: The full rink in view at an affordable price; the front rows sit fairly low for an upper tier.
Cons: Noticeably higher than the lower bowl; the back rows are a long way from the ice.
200 Level corners and ends205-217, 222-234
The rest of the upper bowl, wrapping the corners and both ends. Sections 210 to 212 sit above the Centre Avenue end and 227 to 229 above the Fifth Avenue end.
Pros: Usually the cheapest seats in the building; the front rows of the corners give a clear diagonal view of the whole rink.
Cons: The furthest seats from the ice; for end stage concerts the sections round the Fifth Avenue end are beside or behind the stage.
PPG Paints Arena view from your seat
100 Level centre ice, bench side
101 to 103 (centre ice at 102)Club seats directly behind the team benches, with the Penguins closest to 101 and 102 and the visitors nearer 103. You are level with the players and see every line change, but the lowest rows look through the benches.
Tip: Choose a middle row if you want to see over the benches and still feel close.
100 Level centre ice, penalty box side
111 to 113 (centre ice at 112)The mirror of the bench side, looking across the rink at both benches, with the penalty boxes in front. No players stand between you and the play on this side.
Tip: These are club seats too, so they include access to the premium lounges.
100 Level corners
104 to 105, 109 to 110, 114 to 116, 120 to 122Diagonal views close to the glass. Good for watching plays develop into the zones, though the far end of the rink feels distant from the low rows.
Tip: Sit a little higher in the corners so the glass and boards do not cut off the near crease.
100 Level, Penguins attack end
106 to 108 (Centre Avenue end)Behind the net where the Penguins attack twice, according to the arena's own club seating map. Expect goals at your end in the first and third periods and a long look down the ice the rest of the time.
Tip: Protective netting runs above the glass behind each goal, so rows a little higher up give a cleaner view.
100 Level, Fifth Avenue end
117 to 119The other end, below the party suites. It is the standard stage end for concerts on the arena's published end stage charts, so for shows these seats may be behind the stage or not sold.
Tip: For hockey these are among the cheapest lower bowl seats.
200 Level sidelines
201 to 204 and 218 to 221A raised, head on view of the full rink from above the loge boxes and suites. Sections 218 to 221 look straight across at both benches.
Tip: The front rows of these sections are the best value in the building for a clear view of plays forming.
200 Level corners and ends
205 to 217 and 222 to 234The highest and furthest seats, wrapping the corners and ends. The corners still give a full rink view; the end sections look down the length of the ice.
Tip: For end stage concerts, 209 to 213 face the stage head on from the Centre Avenue end.
How do PPG Paints Arena seat numbers work?
Your ticket shows a section, row and seat. Three digit sections starting with 1 are the 100 Level lower bowl (101 to 122) and those starting with 2 are the 200 Level upper bowl (201 to 234). The numbers run round the bowl from 101 at centre ice on the bench (Washington Place) side, through the Centre Avenue end (106 to 108), along the far side (111 to 113 at centre ice), round the Fifth Avenue end (117 to 119) and back to 122 beside 101. The 200 Level follows the same pattern, with 201 to 204 above the benches, 210 to 212 above the Centre Avenue end, 218 to 221 opposite the benches and 227 to 229 above the Fifth Avenue end. Rows are lettered from the front, starting at A in most sections; in some centre ice sections the first row sold for hockey is not row A. The 200 Level sections run from row A to row Q.
Reading a ticket: Section 219, Row D: 200 Level, just off centre on the side opposite the benches, four rows up from the front of the upper bowl, so you look straight across at both benches with a full view of the rink.
PPG Paints Arena floor plan for concerts
Concert layouts vary by tour, so always check the seat map for your show. On the arena's published end stage charts the stage sits at the Fifth Avenue end, the arena floor becomes numbered floor sections, and the lower and upper bowls face the stage from the sides and the Centre Avenue end.
The floor: The floor is sold as numbered floor sections or general admission, depending on the show. A sound mixing position usually takes up space in the middle or back of the floor.
The stage: At the Fifth Avenue end, in front of 100 Level sections 117 to 119.
Sections 106 to 108 and 209 to 213 face the stage head on from the far end. The sideline sections see it side on, and the angle sharpens as you get closer to the stage end. Sections round and behind the stage (roughly 115 to 121 and the 200 Level sections around 222 to 233) are closed or sold as limited view, depending on the production.
