About AFAS Dome

The AFAS Dome, known for 92 years as the Sportpaleis, is Belgium's flagship arena: a vast elliptical hall seating 18,575 for sports and holding up to 23,001 with standing for concerts. Billboard ranked it the world's second most visited event hall in 2007-08, behind only Madison Square Garden, and it hosts around 200 events a year from major concert tours to the Diamond Games tennis and the World Gymnastics Championships. Seating is organised into a lower tier and an upper balcony wrapped in colour-coded zones rather than named stands.

The AFAS Dome is Belgium's largest indoor arena, standing in the Merksem district of Antwerp. Opened as the Sportpaleis on 11 September 1933 and designed by the Apostel-Mampaey family of velodrome builders, its 11,600-square-metre roof spans the elliptical hall without interior pillars — a construction first. A Hospitality Center was added in 2005, and a €20 million redevelopment between 2010 and 2013 replaced the roof, added a balcony (2011) and permanent stands (2012), and removed the old cycling track (2013), growing capacity to 23,001. After 92 years under its original name, the venue became the AFAS Dome on 1 September 2025 under a naming partnership with Dutch software company AFAS.

How the venue is set up

End-stage concert

The stage sits at one end of the ellipse with the floor standing or seated, up to 23,001 with standing room on the floor.

Sport

The bowl closes around the court or rink with 18,575 seats, the configuration used for gymnastics, tennis, basketball and hockey.

Reduced configurations

The hall can be curtained down for smaller productions, using the hall's flexible floor and the balcony added in 2011-13.

Wheelchair users must order seats for themselves and up to two companions by phone or contact form, not through the website, and cannot be seated in the central square; numbers of accessible seats are limited. Entrance 7b, on the right-hand side of the building, is accessible for wheelchair users and other visitors with specific needs. Accessible parking in car park Vaart can be reserved from two weeks before an event with proof such as a disability parking card, and lifts at metro station Sport reach street level. Visitors needing extra assistance are asked to arrive at least 40 minutes before the event, and hearing-impaired visitors may bring their own interpreter; blind and visually impaired visitors may bring a guide dog.

The arena stands at Schijnpoortweg 119 in Merksem, beside the Lotto Arena. The Sport premetro station is a short walk from the venue, with Schijnpoort station nearby, and the venue sits close to the R1 ring road with parking around the Schijnpoortweg site.
